PG - Welch
SG - Andre Hollins
SF - Rodney/ Oto
PF - Mbakwe (hopefully)
C - Sampson III

That looks like a pretty solid starting lineup to me that is definitely capable of finishing in the top half of the Big Ten. I am looking forward to seeing this lineup in action.

PG-Welch
SG-Austin Hollins
SF-Rodney
PF-Ralph
C-Colton
Tubby is always going to give his veterans a shot first. With this lineup we will have a good defensive group who is smart and should take care the ball.Im sure Mbakwe is leaving but with the red shirts and freshmen we will be a tall deep and still pretty athletic team. Im excited.

IF Trevor comes back, the lineup I'd like to see on the floor would be....

Julian Welch
Andre Hollins
Rodney Williams
Trevor Mbakwe
Mo Walker

While it would never be the starting lineup, it's the lineup I'd like to see on the floor

next year

If...always big if...2 of the following 3 pan out Welch, Coleman, Hollins...we should be pretty good next year. Thats a big IF though..but at least the players coming in have some pedigree (4 stars or good offers)..

Our bench should be a lot better..which is key. Walker is key to all of this I think..especially if Trevor leaves. Austin is already a great defender and can finish at the rim.. if he works on his jump shot a bit..(good stroke)..he could be great off the bench (or starting). Oto will hopefully provide that 3 point threat we need.

Hope springs eternal!

Marcus tweet:

"Being able to move Andre Hollins to shooting guard spot will be huge for team next season. Wouldn't be surprised if he's a leading scorer."

Go Gophers!!

• In writing about the future of the Gophers here the other day, Smith said I failed to mention maybe the best big man on the team is 6-11 Elliott Eliason, the Gatorade Player of the Year in Nebraska his senior year. Eliason was redshirted this past season and will have four years of eligibility starting next season. "Eliason has all of the tools," Smith said. "He needs to get a little stronger, but has the ability to do it all."

Rotate three groups or waves?

Wave one; Sampson, Mbakwe, Williams, Austin, Welch
Wave two; Ellison, Walker, Oto, Coleman, Andre (I like this lineup)
Wave three; Colton, Dawson, Halverson, Chip, Maverick

C-Iverson
PF-Sampson
sf-R.Williams
OG-Andre Hollins
PG-J.Welch
6 man-Coleman
If healthy Walker will get starter minutes

its sad that colton never reached his pontential even partially. there were times this summer that watching him i thought he could be 3rd team all BT, what happened?

this team i will also add, might not score very well, but thats yet to see. I think they will be like this year's PITT squad, no real scoring threats, but incredibly hard to score on with all the long atheltic wings, and rebounding bigs. Thats what i see this team doing next year

I tend to be an optimist, but it might be a bit premature to compare next years Gopher squad to PITT, a likely 1 seed later today. That said, I hope you are right!

We will play a bunch of players and that will allow use to play at a high tempo. On Defense we should be able to press again, the thing I wonder about here is who is going to be our lock down defender like Al. Walker and Mbakwe will be able to score inside in a set offense. Andre and Oto should help pull defenders away from the basket with their shooting allowing other options to open up; like Coleman or Williams slashing in.
The future is so bright I have to wear sunglasses

Homer/optimist post of the week.

Hope you're right...

I think they will score pretty well, but I still don't see a solution for their three point defensive issues.

well they should be a much quicker team than they were at the end of the season. That should help a ton!!!

I think Austin Hollins can be a lockdown defender next year, as can Williams.

^ exactly my point, so many long athletic defenders like pitt has. not saying we'll be as good as them, but we will not give up 40 threes a game next year

Really? I hope you are right but you must have gotten some maroon colored glasses -
Brand new backcourt, nothing at the 3, a very good PF if he is back, and a soft but skilled center, that is top half of the B10? Looks a lot more like 7-11 than 11-7...

But to be fair, three of the people you listed have never played a B10 game, so I wont get to worried or excited until I see them in action...

who in the BT is so much better next year? everyone loses All bt players and seniors

Share some enthusiasm

I share some of the enthusiasm on the post for two reasons:

1. Some of the news guys may be able to shoot the ball.

The 2010 squad was full of athletic guys that that threw up a shocking number of airballs. Next year, Oto, Andre & Julian are supposedly good outstide shooters. That's two more than we had this year (Blake). Coleman sounds like he has a good mid-range game. That's one more than we had this year. Walker has a nice touch for a big man. That will make at least two next year (along with Ralph), and Walker shouldn't get pushed around like Ralph. I don't know if Mav, Chip, or Austin will ever develop good outside shots, but it sure would be a plus if one of them did. I was shocked to see Austin miss badly many times from the outside this year, so I don't know what to think about his shot.

Our flat out inability to shoot the ball allowed defenses to sag off our players in a way I don't ever remember seeing. On any one possession, we could have two or three guys (guards) literally standing with the ball near the three-point line with nobody anywhere close to them. The other teams just DARED them to shoot, and for good reason. They were awful shooters (look at the percentages). How can you expect to work the ball effectively inside when nobody cares about guarding any of your guards (ther than Blake)? Pretty tough.

2. Our inside play has a chance to be better (if Trevor comes back)

Let's face it: Ralph has no effective inside moves, other than an occasional jump hook, and he is afraid of mixing it up inside. Colton has some inside moves and he is tough, but he is the head of the MN Bricklayers' Union. I couldn't believe how many bunnies he missed this year on decent post moves. He just doesn't seem to have any touch, which baffles me as he showed some last year. It is too bad, because I love his toughness and attitude. He seems like a great kid who works hard. However, Walker has both size, and touch. It would be nice if he could jump just a little bit next year.

Also, nobody seems to be too high on Eliason. I only saw him at the Tubby's Tipoff (not much of an audition), but I saw him make a few nice moves inside. From what Tubby has said, he may be the best big man from a skill standpoint. He will have to gain a lot of strength, but I'm excited to see two guys that may actually have a clue what to do when they get the ball inside. Of course, Trevor is the key to our inside play next year. If he doesn't come back, Eliason and Walker will have to grow up quickly, and they have a chance to leap past Colton and maybe even Ralph in the depth chart if they can score and play a little defense.

I think the addition of Welch (who can apparently drain it from distance at a collegiate level) and Walker (who was playing really well before he got hurt) will do this team wonders. Not to mention having more than 8 scholarship players in general will be great.

Oh yeah, and having an actual PG might help.

Ralph Sampson
Royce White
Rodney Williams
Corey Joseph
Devoe Joseph

Oh wait...

Assuming Trevor is gone.

Sampson
Williams
Walker
Andre Hollins
Welch

Best players on the court is what I hope Tubby goes with.

Please, no more second wave type situations.
