Ja’Quan Newton has cut his list to six.

The 2014 Neumann-Goretti point guard is down to UCLA, Oregon, Minnesota, Syracuse, Miami and Texas A&M.

Newton will hold in-home visits with the schools before scheduling official visits, Neumann-Goretti assistant John Mosco told SNY.tv.

Newton and Brooklyn Lincoln guard Isaiah Whitehead have talked about packaging, possibly at UCLA, Syracuse or Minnesota. Whitehead has said he wants to visit UCLA, Arizona and Syracuse.

I know it doesent mean much but its nice to see that not only are we offering a bunch of top tier recruits but we seem to be pretty much making everyones final list so pitino's gotta be doing something right

I really hope we can get these guys on campus for official visits. That's critical.

Go Gophers!!

+1

If we can get them here.. our chances really go up.. I think the Twin Cities and the Campus shows well, especially in the late summer / early fall.

This is great news. Pitino just has to convince him to take an official (we should be able to beat on Texas A & M) and then be a hell of a salesman!

Only school I'm truly worried about: Syracuse. If Kaleb Joseph commits, I feel the odds are heavily in our favor. Lock 'em down Ricky!

Hopefully Kaleb Joseph commits ASAP to improve our chances, if he doesn't we might not be in as good of a position as we think.

Lock 'em down Ricky!!!

So much for the idea that he wants to stay in Philly.

STrib blog: Elite point guard, Ja'Quan Newton, includes Gophers on his short list

He told ESPN recruiting analyst Dave Telep today that he plans to visit Miami, Syracuse, UCLA and Oregon for sure. Whether he goes on another will be up to him -- but he made it clear that he has been impressed with Minnesota's effort.

"I was going by who contacted me the most and who I built relationships with," Newton told Telep. "Coach Pitino was at every game."

Interesting that Newton makes a point of mentioning that Pitino was at every game a day after Pitino discussed going to recruits' games in July in his last blog post.

Has he already made an unofficial visit to Minnesota? Unless he has, it doesn't look good that he is planning to make visits to four of the other schools and not us.

Assuming that Ennis isn't a one and done not sure I see the logic of someone like Newton signing with Syracuse, very likely that his playing time would be limited.

Pretty sure he hasn't been on campus. I'd be pretty shocked if we didn't get an official after all of the Minnesota talk in his interviews and tweets.

Amelia Rayno (@AmeliaRayno) tweeted at 0:32 PM on Wed, Jul 31, 2013:Just spoke with Ja'Quan Newton, who said he "thinks" he will visit Minnesota, and that he's not sure he'll take all five visits.

Interesting that he cut Villa-nowhere right after they got the commit from <blanking on name - not good> Booth???

And this is why ESPNs report was inaccurate. Thanks for the work Amelia! Keep it comin.

once joseph commits to cuse i would think us and UCLA would be the only package options for Newton and Whitehead

Not a day goes by with out gopherholers talking implications of the package. Definitely appears to be wearing off (not to say they don't end up at the same school).
