I caught most of these games before heading over to the Maryland/Gopher contest.

Michigan State (1-0) defeated Illinois (1-1) 71-47 but the major news was Suzy Merchant collapsing on the sidelines. Merchant is apparently okay. Merchant's collapse occurred about the same time that Spartan, Branndais Agee, was forced out of the game with an injured knee. After play resumed, MSU went on a 14-0 run.

The 47-year old Merchant hit the ground in front of the bench with just under eight minutes left in the game and was down briefly. She was eventually helped up and taken back into the locker area.

MSU associate head coach Amaka Agugua reported that Merchant was fine following the Spartans’ 71-47 victory.

"First of all that was very scary," Agugua said. "She went down pretty hard. She fainted and was a little discombobulated when she got up. She was trying to figure out what happened. She’s doing well. She knows what happened at the end of the game. She was communicating very well. She’s going to be OK."

Michigan State released a statement Sunday night that Merchant was transported to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing for tests and will be kept overnight as a precautionary measure.

In Madison, the Badgers (0-1) gained a player, BC transfer guard Ashley Kelsick became eligible, but fell to Michigan (2-0) 73-56. The Badgers had no answer to Hallie Thome who scored 37 points and pulled down 14 rebounds.
