New Scout Top 100: Nine recruits showing interest in the Gophers

Looks like tOSU and MD have some serious talent coming on board in this class already.

I just noticed that too...obviously tOSU isn't a huge surprise but shortly after Maryland joins the B1G they could be really tough.

Interesting they have Vaughn behind Whitehead. Can't even imagine how excited I'd be if we pulled off the grand slam and landed 4 off of that list (Macura, White, Robinson, and Whitehead probably being the most likely 4some).

Edit: Also, is #4 about the lowest Tyus has been ranked in the last 3 or 4 years? Seems like He's always been at the very least top 3.

is it a surprise that tum tum isn't in the top 100?

The state of Minnesota would go crazy if we had a class of 4-5 top 50 players. The Barn would definitely be rocking!!!
It is time the luck of Minnesota Sports turns to something great. Lets start with a big commitment on Aug. 25th from Perkins. As for Tyus Jones, I am starting to think we actually "might" have a shot at him. As Minnesota fans, we have learned to never expect anything too great as we are always disappointed. Hopefully, the class of 2014 will be one we will always remember!

Having lived in Maryland, they take Terps basketball VERY seriously with a strong basketball tradition and terrific regional recruiting base up to NYC and down the coast.

They will be a major, usually top half of conference factor in the B1G.

Maryland is getting better recruits in the top-100 lists since Turgeon arrived. Gary Williams was one of those old school coaches that didn't like AAU. Turgeon has already built relationships with AAU teams (namely DC Assault) that Maryland had been cut off from under Williams. I would agree that they should usually be in the top half of the Big Ten with the way they are recruiting, but there are already five programs that right now are positioned to be perennial top-25 teams (IU, Mich, MSU, OSU, UW) and another in Illinois that I think will get there eventually. Add in Maryland, and that's the group of seven programs that I think are in the best shape to get the most top-half finishes in the near future.

Sorry to be a homer, but there is absolutely no reason -- ZERO -- why Wisconsin bb should continue to perennially be above Minnesota. You're talking about a program that didn't even make the NCAA tournament for like 50 years, basically two generations of complete loserdom, usually has fewer in state high level recruits than MN, and has another D-1 program to compete with. Competitive, yes. Perennial top-25, no.

I'm also not confident that the state of Michigan can continue to support two perennial top 25 programs. The state is falling apart, population moving out, and if you look historically it's usually been one or the other (MSU or UM) that's "up" at any given time.

Maryland's going to be good. They are getting the "right" kind of top recruits ... the ones that are rated highly but not so high they'll turn pro early. The move to the B1G and Under Armour's growth are both going to help them financially. Actually they're a lot like MN ... a program that SHOULD be good, has had periodic moments of success, but then ruined by periodic scandals (and an administration sometimes unfriendly to big time sports).

I feel like Scout is less reliable than Rivals and ESPN. I might be completely off base, but over the years I feel like I remember Rivals and ESPN being a lot more in agreement and accurate/updated frequently.

Agreed. I don't take them as seriously as Rivals or ESPN. I prefer Rivals.

Well, at least until Bo Ryan retires, they are almost always going to be a top-half Big Ten team. It may be that he only has like 5 years left (as a critic of the brand of basketball under Bo, the thought of him retiring soon makes me say "Yay!"). In 5 years, Bo may be almost completely bald. Now, maybe after he leaves you have an argument that UW won't be a top-half team, but even after he leaves their program will be in good shape and they are going to be primed to continue to be a top-half team, but it is all up to the quality of the coach as to whether they will remain there. They have the facilities, fan base, and recent history sufficient to continue to have a perennial top-25 program even after Ryan leaves.

I think the obvious counter with regard to UW is that Bo Ryan hasn't recruited very many 4* and 5* players lately, and the right coach could get a lot more. That's part of why making the right hire will be critical for them - they have everything they need to continue what they're doing, it will hinge on who they hire next. I don't have any doubt they could capitalize on the bumper crop of recruits coming from Chicago every freaking year. There is plenty of talent in that area to go around, and if UW hires a coach who can get top talent, they could be in better shape in some ways. They could go either way, but if they get a coach who knows what he's doing and can get the higher profile talent, they could continue on the same level they're at more or less.

Interestingly, Coach K is even older than Bo Ryan but that black hair dye is doing wonders for him.

This isn't true at all. Go look at their most recent recruits. Dekker was a 5 star and they are also in on Kevon Looney and Diamond Stone. They have also been in on and gotten a slew of 4 star players. Everyone thinks because they are boring as hell to watch that they don't get good recruits. Bo has recruited VERY well at Wisconsin, maybe not at the same level as tO$U, MSU, etc. but they have brought in some big time recruits.

Not lately. They have 3 former RSCI top-100 recruits, Dekker, Anderson (who is no good) and Koenig (who is a freshman and may not contribute much). They try to pursue top recruits but they rarely get them. No question in my mind that they can do a lot better than that in future years with a different style of play and a different coach. They had a much better talent base back in 2008 for example.

I would agree with you to a degree. Bo did better on the recruiting trail early on than he is given credit for. However, there was a bit of a drop after the 2007 class that included Leuer and Nankivil. Since then, I think the biggest gets (on paper) were Berggren and Uthoff. The 2012 class (i.e. Dekker) seems to have started improved recruiting. Koenig is a very nice get in 2013, and both Ohio kids (Hayes and Brown) had respectable offer lists. Ethan Happ appears to be pretty underrated in 2014, and UW is very much in the mix for Kevon Looney to go with Happ. The 2015 class could be very good, with Diamond Stone and Henry Ellenson at the top of the priority list. Being in-state guys, I expect UW to be in it until the end, with a pretty reasonable chance that they land at least one. UW also really likes Chicago's Charles Matthews in that class, but he's a top 25 kid. I see UW as a longshot for Matthews, but he visited Madison this past weekend and had very nice things to say about his visit. With the lack of bigs and all the guards this season, I think you'll see a little faster pace than the past couple seasons.

Other than the Gophers, this is the #1 thing I'm looking forward to this season. Literally every Badger basketball fan I know (which is a lot) says they are going to be fast pace, up tempo team. Some attribute it to Koenig joining the team, others say that Bo has been telling every kid he recruits that they are going to be playing faster. I will believe it when I see it. Should be interesting though.

So like....a turtle compared to a snail? That would be faster right?

Scout always has some weird rankings, they are the only site to have tum tum as a 3 star, only site to have Alex illikainen as a 3 star, only site to have Connor Mayes as a 4 star, which I'm not complaining about and only site to have R'ashede as a 4 star

They've changed it now, but they were also the only site to have Reid Travis as a 3* when everyone else had him top 50. Evan Daniels doesn't have his job for his ability to evaluate talent. He has his job because he has a ton of connections and relationships with coaches, which allow him to break a ton of stories and ultimately result in more traffic to their site. If you go to an event that he's at, you'll notice he spends a lot more time talking to caoches than actually watching games.
