New player on the roster – Alexander Starks

That's not him. Alexander Starks is the son of former Gopher Kevin. He's from Illinois and a DB. No Rivals or Scout profile. He's obviously a legacy walk-on. I'll take one of those any day. Good luck, Alexander!

Thanks! My bad - I knew from his bio information above that he was from Illinois but I failed to realize that the video was for a player from California.

I remember Kevin from that miserable '83 season. Didn't he make a long catch and run in our loss to Iowa that year?

Starks

I played with Kevin Starks, TE, through the Salem and Holtz Era in the 80's. Kevin, the father of Alexander, was a great athlete, almost 6'6" long arms, great vertical. Could have played DE, TE, or Linebacker. Probably should have, his talents were wasted at Tight End in the Holtz's Veer Offense. Kevin's other Son is all conference Linebacker at Princeton. I predict Alexander will be similar to Marion Barber. Tough, Smart and with good football instincts.

That would be great. However, that would be downright amazing from a guy that has no Rivals , ESPN, or Scout profile and has been out of football for a year. I do wish him well, and I hope that in a couple of years I'm eating my words--big time.

I am just curious as to why so many people put so much stock in Rivals, ESPN and Scout? I know of 2 kids (1 in MN and 1 in IL) that have moved on to play D-I and D-1AA that do not have profiles. The formula that those websites use to determine "star ranking" is not very scientific to say the least, on top of the fact that some kids do not develop as early as others and turn out to be better players in college than high school. If the coaching staff put him on the roster, there is obviously a reason and I trust the fact that they know more about the situation than any of us do.

If your comparisson with Barber is only on the attitude stuff you mentioned then you could definitely be right because I know nothing about the kid. However even after admitting I know nothing about him I would bet everything I own that from a production standpoint this kid will be nothing at all like MB3.

LOL - Thanks - I think most people here understand this but there are always a few here who don't. The great thing about recruiting services is that give blogs like this enough information so we can have endless pissing matches.

I hear what you're saying about people trusting coaching staffs, but the reason why people put stock in Rivals, ESPN, and Scout is because they are statistically accurate. We could all list players who buck the odds and out perform / under perform their recruiting rankings, but generally (big picture), they are statistically signficant.

And to add to that I have to think it is a very rare occasion when a guy with no profile becomes a key contributer at the D1 BCS level on the field. Obviously the coaches see value in having him on the roster but I would think odds are pretty slim he is expected to be anything more than a scout team contributer.

Looking back on my notes from Natl signing day, I see that Stark shows up as a preferred walkon. There are a couple of other PWO's who haven't shown up on the roster yet (probably still in school)

Nick Hart TE - MN
Aaron Roundtree WR - MN
Brian Smith WR - WI
Chandler Wright OL - MN

Wasn't there some buzz about Chandler?

Yeah, Chandler Wright is a pretty good football player. I thought he was a NDSU/MAC level guy the few times I saw him in HS. I believe he's from Lousiana or Texas and he moved up here as a junior. He reminds me a bit of Epping (probably not as good), but he's gritty and nasty and I think he's the kind of guy who will end up in our 2 deeps when he's an upper classmen.

I guess that's what I was getting at. It's EXTREMELY rare to not have a profile on any of the services and to be a PWO or even a key contributor on a D-I school. I'll bet there are no more than a handful among the 120 schools.
