New Pitt Coach Mike Haywood Arrested

Ha Ha. Nice going. How dumb can you be. At least this will cheer up the depressed Nebraska fans a bit.

Boy, I bet FatPrick Reusse is really peeved now that the Gophers didn't hire him. He would be licking his chops over this.

Glen is willing to answer the phone. Will he break the Mike Price record for getting fired before even coaching a game? At least Price got check some hot strippers before getting canned!

What a dumb a$$. Again, glad we hired a search committee, because these things typically aren't isolated incidents.

Do you think he ran into any Hawkeye players while incarcerated?

I'm wondering how he was even able to get the bond hearing, on a Saturday and New Years Day no less, as originally it looked like he was going to be cooling his heels in jail for the whole weekend. Must be nice to get privileges like that.

Serious egg on Pitt's face, although it remains to be seen how thoroughly they investigated his background, and if there were other incidents like this in his past. It's too soon to prejudge though, and it's very possible this was the first time he's ever done something like this. Sometimes you can do your full due diligence and still get blindsided by something coming totally out of the blue.

I am stunned. I don't know how much, if at all, the Gophers looked at Haywood before hiring Kill, but I seem to remember some local media types chastised the U for hiring Kill over Haywood.

It all depends on whom they get to replace him with, right? Memories can be short. A lot riding on the replacement.

Well this certainly ranks right up there with the hiring of Mike Price at Alabama and George O'Leary at Notre Dame doesn't it.

Did Pitt really have any other option at this point?

Not exactly a great start to the New Year for either the Pitt Panthers or most especially Mike Haywood. Theoretically things can only get better for Pitt, while for Haywood they could get even worse. If he's convicted of a felony, his coaching career is probably done, and he's still only 46 years old.

Looks like this answers my question as to who made the better hire. I thought it was a huge mistake to fire Dave, but also thought this new guy was a decent hire. This could really hurt the program over the next 5 years. Think of notre dame after o Leary.

From what I've read it sure sounds like he's guilty, but what if he's not?

Good point. He will get his day in court and will get the opportunity to present his side of the story and let a jury of his peers decide on his guilt or innocence. And if he were proven innocent, I have no idea what would happen, but would guess we would probably see some big lawsuits flying around.

The espn story said that Pittsburgh had cause to fire Haywood. It might be that any type of domestic dispute would be enough.

They did not. This would have effected recruting greatly. Plus, even if eventually found not guilty, this incident would have been a cloud over the program.

Wasn't Mike Price exonerated and won a hefty lawsuit? Hate to take shots at a guy who was later found out to be relatively innocent. Maybe my memory isn't serving me right....

While all the coaches deservedly were let go, I think it's worse for Pitt. Price didn't do anything illegal, but he did use very bad judgement. What O'Leary did was just plain stupid. He had years to correct his resume, but just let it slide until it cost him his plum job. Pitt hired a guy with deep emotional problems, which may have shown up with a rigid background check. Even if there wasn't any past problem, I think they have more egg on their face then either Alabama or Notre Dame did.

This post is on the money. As someone who has worked at universities for 16 years what I have observed as that incompetence is well tolerated. What will get one fired is to publically embarrass or humiliate (egg on faces) the university.

With the new talk about the Pitt opening around Bradley or Cryst, it got me circled back on this thread topic. I can't believe I didn't hear about Pitt firing Haywood. New Year's Eve was a pretty crazy night that took a few days to recover, but really, I don't remember hearing about this at all. I laugh at the people who said we should have hired him because his team beat Kill's in the MAC championship. The players played that game.

No he was not. The lesson here is you shouldn't use your company credit card for adult entertainment.

It has been overshaddowed by Harbaugh and all the firings. It was pretty quiet I agree.
