new parking/tailgating map

Thanks for the info. Good to see some day of game parking on the east bank.

Edit: Also notice that the Gortner Ave ramp on the St. Paul campus is no longer an option or a shuttle stop. That is a good move too!

FYI, that lot has 264 parking spaces per the U's website. Also nice to see that they added day of ramp parking behind Coffman which will be a big win for folks who may only be going to one game. Not having any day of parking on the East Bank was a pretty big source of crankiness for non-season ticket holder fans who went to game last season from what I hear. The East River Road garage has 1914 spaces. The means there is plenty of game day parking available that is either a short walk or shuttle ride away from TCF. Good move.

Also agree that getting rid of the Gortner stop sounds like a win for those folks parking on the STP campus.

Great news regarding that 'day of game' tailgate lot next to the Oak Street ramp. I park in the Oak Street Ramp but may park in that open lot to tailgate a time or two this season...

The lot behind Oak Street is a park. Very nice that they decided to use park land. My hope is that they will use this as a test to see if opening up some of the green spaces around campus and the Mall will be feasible.

I'm sure that lot will be THEE lot for the students.

My bad. Just changed the angle on my bing map and it is now a parking lot. Too bad they paved the sucker. They took down some nice looking trees.

When I was in school (does this mean I'm starting to get old?) that block was all run down rental houses.

I wondered when the U of M was gonna pull their head from their a$$

and do something with the C79 lot. I parked in the Oak Street Ramp last year and typically arrived quite early before most fans ascended upon campus. Lot C79 was always empty and everytime I drove I thought to myself, "Jeez, if this was Madison / Iowa City that lot would be full of people lining up to tailgate." That lot didn't even seem to be on the radar of the braintrust at the U of M and would have been a cash cow for them if it had been treated as a "game-day only" option. GoGophers2005 is right - that will be tailgate central for students. Good for non-Greek crowd to have a piece of real estate. Its long term viability is in doubt since I think the U / Fairview will eventually put a medical clinic in that spot.

GoGophers2005, you also wrote:

Looks like eventually there will be green space closer to the stadium that fit your desire. See the link from the U of M's East Gateway Master Plan.

The above is a link to the illustrative plan showing where said green space will eventually be. I like the recommendations below. Hopefully this will jive with the City of Minneapolis' plan to allow food vendors / carts throughout the city.

Stadium Corner is the southeast corner of the
stadium block, and is currently occupied by a
university office building. In the long term, that
building should be replaced with a multipurpose
open space that can accommodate game day
vendors and concessionaires, and the foot traffic
arriving by the Central Corridor LRT line across
23rd Avenue. A flexible landscape zone within a
grid of canopy trees will bring down the scale of
the space and make it inviting for pedestrians on
non-game day.

I know I've posted this illustation before but no one should think of tailgating nearby to be a long term activity. I'd bet by the end of the decade this is what the surrounding area to the stadium will look like. I just hope by then the City of Mpls will let loosen up their restrictions on private lot parking / tailgating.

Won't that just be a complete disaster then? Who's going to want to tailgate if it's nowhere near the stadium? And if you can't tailgate, that cuts in half the reason to go to games, IMO.

If the city of Mpls allows, people will find a way. What disappoints me is tailgating and not being able to see the stadium.

Yeah, and all that medical research that gets done in those buildings... complete disaster. All those cures, all those jobs, all that revenue for the U. Why would they do that, I wonder? Everyone knows that 8 days of tailgating is worth holding that all back.

Yes, I am slightly over-reacting at you a bit. But I'm only doing so because you also have things slightly out of perspective. It is sad that the tailgating will shrink, yes. But we need to take a step back - look bigger picture here.

For those of us with RV's (or in our case a creepy 3 axeled yellow van) I think the Minnesota lot is a huge upgrade! Any other RVer's have any thought?

C79 has been paved for at least a couple of years. They bull dozed a bunch of old houses before paving it over. It's intended for U of M development including medical support facilities, but they couldn't get funding. That may be why they didn't committ the lot last year to game day parking. They may be have been hoping to still develop the lot quickly and/or it was in limbo between departments. I think it's a great tailgating spot.

Well, since the majority of fans don't tailgate anywhere near the stadium already I'm not sure how you think this is going to kill tailgating at the U. Bayfield was simply pointing out that people should avoid looking to the U lots near TCF (or improvements to the pricing structure) as a way to improve the tailgate culture at Minnesota since they're all going bye bye at some point. As Bayfield notes, there can still be a fine tailgate scene if the City stops being dumb. There aren't a bunch of lots in the shadow of Camp Randall, but there is still a good tailgate scene in nearby small private lots b/c the City of Madison lets things happen.

As for who wants to tailgate away from the stadium...I have a great time tailgating on the West Bank. Tailgating isn't about being in the shadow of the stadium IMO (though I wouldn't pass on the opportunity if it presented itself). Its about getting together with friends, cooking meat, and drinking beer.

and do not forget... that area just north of the new biomedical buildings will soon be much more open. The rail line is coming out and a new road, Granary road, will be put in there. Should open up things a lot by eliminating what is essentially a nearly impenetrable barrier just north of campus.

eventually a lot of that rail/industrial space will be more oriented to the U and its research outreach.... and that means more parking lots, bars, restaurants, etc.

don't panic! things will work themselves out... unless you're still waiting for the band to march down University. Then your just plain f*@%ed. ;)

If you have to be able to see the stadium to enjoy tailgating, you're doing it wrong, IMHO.

It's not a matter of needing to be able to see the stadium. It's a matter of being close enough so that it's a very short walk and more time can be devoted to tailgating both before and after.
