Gophers to offer scholarship to DeLaSalle's Evan Williams

Last update: October 9, 2009 - 5:51 PM

Word is the Gophers and head coach Tim Brewster are impressed enough with DeLaSalle senior Evan Williams and are going to officially offer him a scholarship Saturday.

Williams is a college running back prospect but has also shown versatility this year in playing QB for the undefeated Islanders. He already has more than 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards passing this season in five games heading into tonight's game against Blake, with 25 combined TDs rushing and throwing. As of two weeks ago, the only school that had offered him was Wyoming.

Average at best

Deleon Eskridge Jr. at best. Have we learned nothing from our experience thus far? This guy is a special teamer ... maybe. I'd rather they find a big fat pig lineman, like Sconnie does, and hope he's a diamond in the rough. Stockpiling average running backs is plain stupid.

re Y-T: Stod-like vision, balance and speed...plus good power and a nose for the house...not hard to see what Brew likes here.

If he's local and Brew likes him, that's good enough for me.

Yea because Willis is doing soooooooooo well this season.

This is just speculation on my part, but maybe this scholarship offer is in place of the one that was reserved for Seantrel Henderson, and since it seams that he is out of the picture, we can offer it to someone else.

Just a thought

I'd be interested to know if this kid has any big name friends. Big like 6'8" and also going to a private catholic school...

I know we already offered Pirde in a similar move, but it does seem to work, per the florida kids.

I am more worried that this is a "Williams and Huff aren't coming here" offer. I'd be really disappointed if we didn't land any of the 3 big time back that visited for the stadium opener.

I do remember Marion Barber being a no name running back who wasnt good enough to play here

You gotta like local kids playing well enough their senior year to earn an offer. I'm sure the staff evaluated his junior season, told him they'd be watching his senior year, and he earned an offer.

I like his film, but De La Salle doesnt play very great competition. Doesn't have elite speed, but is shifty with good vision. I'd like to know how big he is. Hopefully he gets his scholarship.

I have seen him play, dont get me wrong, he very good, but left thinking he would be a great D2 or decent low level D1 recruit. I would rather see Brew offer this scholarship to the DE from Blaine, Di-jon Starr, and hope to find a diamond in the rough with a pass rushing DE instead of a probable RB.

This probably doesn't interest many here but I was talking to my dad and he told me that Evan's granddad was famous coach/park board commissioner in Minneapolis Ed Solomon.

This is posted above, but not directed at anyone in particular (honestly), but we really need to stop the "Barber, Eslinger, and Decker were lowly recruited/ranked players and they were awesome for us" drumbeat. Those guys were great and fun to watch, but higher rated and recruited players have a better chance to become solid/good/great/outstanding players than lower rated ones.

A 'rebasing' of our recruiting expectations is in order from us. Glen Mason (no shots here toward him) recruited entirely different than Brewster. We have a program on the rise in a new stadium, with playing time to sell (in some cases) to solid players. Go for them, i believe we are and have.

That being said, this 60+ posts of arguement about Pride committing is BS. It is unfair to Pride and to Brewster. He has put together a solid class thus far and he probably sees something in him. If his intentions are otherwise, who cares? Pride is the type of guy we would have been happy to get a few years ago under Mason. He pans out and plays for us his Sr year, good for him. He doesnt and rides the pine, ok. How many of Mason's 1 and 2 star recruits did that over the years? Plenty. Even your top programs dont have 55 stars on their squads.

Disclaimer- In case i havent pointed this out enough, this is not meant to turn into a Mason bashing post.

You can add another low rated Minnesota kid to the list of recent Minnesota offers, as Billy Turner the OT from Mounds View got an offer from Brew last week.

evan has talent but not at the D1 level. he is a mid major at best. go after some real running talent please. is lipscome going to be here next year?

Everyone complained for years about not being able to keep local kids home. Brewster has done a good job since taking over of that, and now everyone is complaining.

We are not landing Dontae Williams, guaranteed. We have no chance. The only reason he hasn't committed to Oregon yet is they do not allow prospects to commit until they take their official, which is OCT 31. He already tried to commit but they wouldn't allow him to. His best friend from high school is also the future quarterback on the team so I wouldn't get your hopes up. I must admit, he is the one guy I wanted the most out of all the recruits we were after, except the beast from CDH.

Lipscomb is still intent on being a gopher. I don't know if he'll be here next year or not. I don't think he will be, I think you're looking at the year after. He has opted not to compete in JC this year to conserve a year of eligibility for his D1 career. So he's certainly doing it the right way. But it's a long time between now and then.

He is red-shirting his first year at junior college and playing his second year so he can add one more year of eligibility here.

Williams ran a 10.8 in the 100 last year, not spectacular but legit. He does seem to have nice acceleration, no reason to think he couldn't contribute down the road. Moundsview's Turner getting an offer is a suprise, we already have a bunch of OL, he's an ok player, but maybe he's impressed someone so far?
