Rivals and Scout are reporting Dwayne Mitchell, the Louisiana LB, has given his verbal to Minnesota tonight.

6-2, 220 lbs 4.5 speed

Welcome aboard! Nice to see another D recruit. Keep em coming Brew!!

I heard that Mitchell was the most impressive player at the Gophers camp this summer.

Not surprising. We were the only BCS school that has offered so far and he himself said he was surprised by the lack of interest. Here's hoping the coaching staff saw something others did not.

I imagine it would be a bit harder to get attention in Louisiana though. Most prospects aren't going to be good enough for LSU and there aren't any other BSC schools in the state. Then again, he's from New Orleans so I'm sure there were other school scouting the area.

So good to see us go down south and...

snatch one away from the Ragin' Cajuns. Hell yeah!

Maybe my bro Jike can watch him in person since he is in New Orleans everyday except Saturdays, when somehow he ends up at every Gopher football game!

Looks and sounds like he has great size and speed for LB. I love these kind of guys as I can see them starting for 2 or 3 years if they have any football instincts at all. Still need another couple DT's, couple more LB's and at least 3 more DB's.
Also, did you see what he said about Garin yesterday? Sounds like he has a chance to be a really good DE. Just needs a little more strength and weight.

This is always much more important to me than the star rankings given out by the websites. Brew and Co. saw something good, and hopefully this turns out to be something of a steal.

Remember when that kid from Reno held a fake press conference for his commitment to Cal (over Oregon), but actually didn't have offers from either?

Those were the good old days.

New Orleans? Katrina? Didn't we read about transcript issues due to the 2005 hurricane RE: Lipscomb? That one always seemed a bit strange.

Hope this kid and all the others qualify and hang in there until LOA next Feb.

Having read the article, it sounds like Mitchell's recruitment was handled pretty professionally. Like other posters have said, all indications are the kid has good size, athleticism and good grades to boot. Plus, I like the fact that his coach basically said "I don't want any kid on my team to commit to any school unless they visit there first." In other words, he's interested in what is best for the kids, not what looks best for his program.

All and all, appears pretty solid to me.

I was working last night when someone came in and said a local kid committed to Minnesota. I'd never even heard of the school, let alone the kid. But I don't follow recruiting much, so that's not surprising...

Enjoy the scrimmage tomorrow, I'll see ya in three weeks.

that was hilarious!

I can predict his offer list will increase during his senior year if he plays well, hopefully he sticks to his committment to the gophers if this happens, LSU has some pretty solid LB's already committed so I am not worried of them offering. Remember DECKER was a 2 star out of high school...

I like that Duke offered, that would lend one to believe his academics are solid. We need all the help on the overall GPA that we can get. Don't like losing scholarships due to a poor average GPA.

hopefully Mitchell will bring that big D-tackle we are recruiting at his school with him, Harold Legania. Mitchell looks solid to me and i believe we are taking more chances on players that have a high upside but just need to either get in the weight room or just need a couple of years to mature because we are going to have a bigger class coming in next year. Troy Stoudemire was a 2 star and he is going to bust out this season

I think he is a sleeper because from what I read he is playing defensive end and not linebacker in High School. There are a fair number of kids who fall under the radar because of playing out of position. Troy Stoudemire( High School QB-now Wide receiver) Gary Tinsley High School Defensive line-now linebacker)

We haven't even offered Legania.

And Troy was a 2 star where? Scout? He was a 3 star on rivals.
