Good defensive tackles are usually the hardest to come by (and also why so many college defensive tackles started off playing something else). If he's seriously already at 285 in high school, assuming it's not just fat (or really even if it is), he could be quite the project to work with.

Runs a 4.65? what that is impresive

welcome.. we are glad to have you!!

5'11"....really? That is short by DL standards. Who was the Cretin guy we didn't offer (Dunbar?) because of his height? I thought he was listed as 6 feet?

You're talking about Jonathan Harden...and that same thought actually popped into my head. He was actually shorter (listed at 5'9"), and I'm sure there were reasons besides height that he wasn't offered. Ironically (or hilariously, depending on which GH'er you ask), he ended up at Western Michigan. He's been pretty good for them as well.

From what others have said, 5'9" might have even been a little generous for him.

Harden. Yep. That's who I was referring to. I was talking off the top of my head....something I should always avoid doing!!!!

If anyone is wondering why former Gopher CB Michael Carter was not signed over the weekend as an undrafted free agent, then all they need to do is look at this 11th grader, DL Steven Richardson.

When comparing to Carter, Richardson is the same height, 100 pounds heavier, more than 1/10th of a second faster in the 40, 5 years younger. What's not to like?

If Richardson doesn't work out at DT, then he could be moved to CB, where his 4.61-4.65 speed can be put to good use.

Vikings 1st round draft pick, DT Shariff Floyd, ran a 4.88 at the NFL Combine. CB Michael Carter ran a 4.79. And 11th grade Richardson is in the low 4.6's?!
More ammo supporting the myth that these recruits are going to come in and represent upgrades over past Gopher talent.
Who's kidding whom?

I'd guess he is legitimately 5'8". He was the best HS defensive player I've ever seen in the state of MN. He ended up playing a lot as a true FR at WMU (had a great game against us). I understand why Kill wasn't interested, that's awfully short. But I was gushing about Harden on this board for years.

If this kid is legitimately 5'11", that's a pretty big difference from Harden (5'8" a year later).

Lets just come out and say it, this kid did not run a 40 anywhere near 4.6. It's just not possible.

Harden was not that big in the upper body, and 5"9" was the max height. Does not mean he will not be a great player, but if I was looking at him I would have wondered about how much upper body strength he could add.

I've come to expect almost every Kill recruit to have an awesome name. Even though that isn't the case here, welcome aboard!

 Oh, no. Not another 40 debate.

Richardson did not run in the 4.6s. We're happy if he runs in the 4.8s.

If the staff is offering him this early and accepting his committment this early, they like him alot. He is definitely not a Plan B, C, or D guy. He is most definitely a Plan A guy. Since this staff has shown time and time again that they have a good eye for talent I am pretty excited about this commitment (even if it is only verbal at this point)

2 inches shorter than John Randle. MSU had a 5'9" dt several years ago. is there any advanntage to being a shortish dt?

Welcome aboard Steven!

+1 over and over. This staff wants this kid. that is good enough for me. JERRY, JERRY,JERRY.

I'm just happy he's Western Michigan approved. Still have to trust in the coaches until we see a reason not to. And that won't be for another full year or two.

I don't know if I would say he was small in the upper body. I mean, he obviously had shorter arms, but he was an exceptionally strong kid. He is kind of a pear-shaped fella, so that might play into the perception that he didn't have a big upper body. I can't remember what he did but I know he was supposed to have done pretty well at the US Army Combine at the bench.

Like I said, I've never blasted for Kill not extending an offer to Harden, I get it. He doesn't have the ideal frame to play DT in the Big 10. In fact, he's pretty far from ideal. I don't blame Kill or any other BCS conference coach for not overlooking that issue. I just thought the kid was special and would be one of the few guys who could overcome that issue. He was incredible in HS, as impressive as any player I've seen at CDH.

Chicago Tribune: Mount Carmel's Richardson commits to Minnesota

"I really liked everything about them," he said. "They play in the Big Ten. They have a great coaching staff, and I get along great with the players. Minnesota has very strong academics, and the coaches have a real plan for me. They also recruited me the hardest and made me feel wanted."

Richardson could also see some playing time on offense at Minnesota.

"They recruited me as a defensive lineman, as well as a fullback," he said. "They plan to use me on goal-line offense and short-yardage situations, and that should be pretty fun."

Go Gophers!!

If this kid is really as quick and strong as they say his lack of height will not be a problem. His quickness and power will make him hard to block.

Roland Johnson and Youshoub Timms are 5'11-6'0.
The main thing is how they play to overcome their lack of height, and especially arm length. Johnson has excellent strength at the point of attack, and also has a penetrating style that plays into Claeys' attacking dline philosophy.

With Harden, he was very good, but having seen him in person, he was closer to 5'7'' than 5'9'' and had probably maxed out his growth potential. I think Kill and Claeys invited him to camp and saw that he was a very good HS player that may even contribute as a freshman(as he did at WMU), but that probably would not develop much more.
Hopefully he does well at WMU, has some fun, and gets his degree paid for.

I love the fullback angle to Richardson, he may not be 4.6, but if he's even under 5.0 in the 40 at 280 lbs he's a load coming downhill, whether that be at DT, or FB.
Maryland I here we come.

This kid is incredibly quick. Reminds me of Glover, the great Nebraska nose. He looks like a middle linebacker at times, because he's standing up at the snap. Gets after the ball carrier like he's shot out of a cannon, can make a mistake and recover.

Yep, you make a good point about Johnson, Timms and this kid. They all appear to be real explosive type of DTs who just attack the gaps. Harden, as much as I like him, isn't that kind of DT, he'd be more of an undersized space eater, which is probably a lot more difficult to translate to the college game.

Yeah, I like that too. I hope we see a lot of different sets with multiple TEs/FBs. If I am not mistaken we did a bit out of that diamond formation with a TE and HBack (Henry). I envision that formation with Rodrick Williams, Maxx Williams and Henry running downhill, a scary sight.

Harden left the WMU program earlier this year. http://westernmichigan.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1469718
