With the regular season coming to a close, the University of Minnesota is nearing the final stages of its search for a new head football coach. Gopher fans who want to be the first to get the word on who the new mentor of the Golden Gopher program will be will want to follow Minnesota athletics and football via social media.

The initial announcement from the athletics department will come via Facebook and Twitter. Become a fan of Minnesota Gophers and Golden Gopher Football on Facebook and/or follow @GopherAthletics and @GoldenGopherFB on Twitter.

Gopher Facebook fans or Twitter followers will be the first to see the official announcement.

At first I thought this was sarcasm.
 

I think it's a great idea. Adds a bunch of followers in both spots and another way of communicating with the fan base.

We must be VERY close.
 


Also, this avoids the inevitable pre-press conference leak that usually happens when a coach travels to the new destination for a press conference.

Haha, same here. But I actually like it, definitely will bring some more attention to their pages, get some more fans on them, which means more connected individuals to what's going on with the athletics here. Can't hurt, that's for sure.
 

I have that same feeling Gopher4Life15. I'm hoping this will be a "wow" type hire.
 



So who is it? I'm sick of all the rumors and what not. Let's get it done Joel so we can see who is going to lead our young men into battle next year!

Hopefully not out from left field in the "Denver Broncos Tight End Coach" sense.

I was thinking the same thing. It will be someone we haven't talked about. It always is.

That is what happened last time. Few even new Brew was on the radar. Give one to Zach over at GI that one.
 



Sarcasm would have been something like "Maturi and Bruininks to announce new coach decision dressed as Tweedledum and Tweedledee in YouTube parody video".
 



I thought it was sarcasm too. It seemed like a bizarre idea at first, but the more I think about it, the more sense it makes. For one, it gets a lot more people following Gopher Twitter and Facebook feeds, and a lot of them won't bother to unsubscribe. And it cuts out the middleman of the media. We will be out there first instead of waiting until the media decides just how much coverage it gets.

Yes! Didn't mean anything by my unwitty comeback! Totally understand your point.
 

The good news is that whoever Maturi hires WILL BE BETTER THEN HE WHO SHALL REMAIN NAMELESS. There are names being floated around that I am not thrilled with, but ANYONE of those guys would be 100x's better then the nameless one. It would be impossible to hire someone worse. :clap:
 


Yep we're close.

With all the openings popping up we have to make our move this week IMO.

Not saying you are right or wrong, I don't recall them making that announcement, just that he was basically one of the front runners and favorites for the job.

...If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Gone are the days when you can sneak the new coach in on a private plane and have a traditional presser. Might as well beat all the tweeters to the punch. Heck, you could photoshop the new coach wearing Gopher gear. Lucky for us Mississippi State's colors are damn close to ours. All you have to do is change the white to gold.:D

Twitter doesn't have quite the dignity of a traditional press conference. At least the team's name is easily reduced to "Go4s," which should save Maturi valuable typing time.

You still have the press conference to introduce him. You just announce it ahead of time on FB/Twitter.
 

I think the FB/twitter will get everyone's attention so when they introduce him, they will have a tubby like crowd there.
