"Coach in waiting" seems to be more and more popular. This may be affecting why some schools are not getting "sexy" hires. More top end coordinators are signing "coach in waiting" agreements. This means that schools will have to overpay to get one of these guys to jump ship.

1. Coach with experience
2. Up and Comer
3. Up and coming Coordinator
4. Coach in Waiting

"Coach in Waiting" actually hit a major speed bump when the NCAA determined that anyone in that position could only go on the road recruiting for the same number of hours as the head coach (which is less than assistants). The Coaches in Waiting at both Texas and Maryland left because they got impatient and had an opportunity to make a lot more money. Given the new rule, I don't expect another "Head Coach in Waiting" announcement anytime soon.

Auburn just went to basics: skip the formalities and throw a ton of money at a guy you want to keep.

WVU just hired the OC from Oklahoma State to be OC and then Head Coach in 2012. I guess he is an unofficial coach in waiting.

Interesting. My guess is that they are hoping naming him early will entice recruits because they will see stability and continuity in the program. That will offset the loss of recruiting hours.

I think you will see the coach in waiting fade away. Texas was a funny situation as Mack Brown will probably be there for another 5-10 years, but if it got Muschamp to stay an extra 2-3 years before he moved on then it probably worked out for them.
