I thought he played with balls the size of an elephant's today and I was really proud of how he competed. My guess is he got his hip pointer shot up when he went back to the locker room so that he could come back in the game and I would guess he's going to be pretty sore this week. I hope he's able to come out and play at full strength next week as I like how he's been playing. That said, Leidner is no slouch. He runs hard and frankly that throw to Engel (come on, catch the ball) on fourth down was pretty darn good, too. We're in pretty good shape right now at QB.

The fourth down TD throw was ballsy as hell.

The first down was there on the scramble.

I've gone from supporting Nelson, to supporting Leidner, to now supporting both of them. I'm totally fine with either one leading our offense and I think each is capable of putting points on the board. Leidner does need to learn how to protect the ball, though.

He wasn't injured, just had severe chafing from those elephant balls.

I think Nelson is the man right now. I'm fairly comfortable with Leidner running the offense, but Nelson has been looking like Mankato Jesus the past two games.

Nelson still misses wide open guys now and then but he looked very comfortable today. Can't complain about throwing for nearly 300 and scoring 42.

I would like us to use Leidner inside the five like Oklahoma did with Blake Bell the past few years. He's just a big mismatch near the goal line.

I said to Mrs Bayfield that he was out for the rest of the game. Totally surprised when he came back in. My thought too about a hip pointer and the needle. He will be very sore tomorrow and hope he can recoup and lead us to a big W over PSU.

Leidner might have played a lot more and maybe even the rest of the game had he not put the ball on the ground twice. I thought he looked good, but he's got to work on his ball protection and my guess is he gets that squared away after today being summoned over to the sidelines to stand next to the coaches the remainder of the game after his lack of ball protection. I'm sure it got his attention.

I'm fine with both playing. Not a fan of throwing deep into coverage as much as they, but it worked out.

I have been saying that Nelson gives us the best chance of winning for a while now and to me it is more obvious than ever that he is better. I do like leidner as a every once in a while pace of change qb. If the receivers weren't sub average he would, in my opinion, be in the top half of the qb's in the big ten. Great season so far, go gophers!!

His throw to Donovan Jones on the last drive was cold blooded by both parties involved.

Absolutely. I was at the game and couldn't believe he was throwing to Jones. True frosh making what, his 2nd or 3rd catch of the year in that situation?! Badass

Nelson will do for now but Leidner is the Gopher QB of the future.

PN's top >>> ML's top. I'm not dussing Mitch, but the ceiling is higher with Philip and it isn't that close. Hmmm, maybe the coaches knew that when they played him earlier this year through his struggles.

It's worth repeating my statement from last week - Nelson is the Gophers' best QB since at least Cupito, and if he keeps this up he could approach AAK standards soon. The kid passes on the rollout better than any Gopher QB that I can remember.

I'm impressed with Nelson -- people seem to forget that he's a true sophomore! His passing game will continue to improve, and hopefully he'll lead the Gophers as we improve to Big Ten contention.

Leidner is a little more raw as a passer, but the kid obviously has ability. I wonder if he'll say at QB behind Nelson, leap in front of Nelson, or switch positions.

I agree that we play Nelson with Leidner getting a few series to soften up the defense with his running. Phil is the man that will win.

Yep, I said that last week on here. I would even like to see him come in during other situations in short yardage as well. Let him pound. I don't trust him to throw too much though.

I thought Nelson was done for the night, but he came back and led the Gophs on a cold-blooded drive. Amazing, gutsy performance by a QB playing with a lot of confidence at the moment.

I think he has looked significantly better than Leidner the past 3 games and, though I like Mitch, I think we have a much better chance to beat PSU with Nelson than without him.

Nelson played terrific. I think he is going to be special here once our receivers really start to improve. Jones can absolutely play, Wolitarsky looks promising, Maxx is a certified stud, I'm really excited to see what happens when our receivers create mismatches for him.

On a side note, it says something about Coach Kill and his staff about how good these two young QBs have handled the shuffling around. QBs typically aren't used to that kind of thing and the way Leidner and Nelson cheer each other on and seem to be a pretty cohesive duo is really not common. I like Nelson and Leidner, I'm glad we have both of them.

Nelson "misses some throws"? Serious? Compared to the guy I saw against Iowa, he has progressed immensely. He made a bunch of big plays and great decisions. It was not perfection. Sorry. But to come up so big in the passing game when this team is built on the ground game was a great example of his potential. The experience he gained from starting those games last year is paying dividends. And coming back out of the lockerroom to lead the come-back win was pretty amazing.

Speaking of which, sure is nice to be able to put in Leidner when Phil went down. Starting Mitch those three games helped his confidence, I believe, even though Nelson's experience makes him a better option for us at this point. I think this team, and those two QBs, believe they can win with either at the helm.

Did anyone catch the reference made by Couch, I think, about the comparison to NIU's Chandler Harnish and Jordan Lynch? This stuff isn't happening by accident, folks. It's the blueprint and has been used many times by this staff.

So, which is it? Phil the Thrill? Full Nelson?

Both QB's played well. We put up 575 yards. Both, however, showed areas left for big improvement. Nelson missed open receivers and Leidner put it on the turf. Can you just imagine we they are really clicking?

Limegrover's offense has gone from an embarrasment to a thing of beauty that has allowed both QB's to shine. We've gone From one dimensional to a dangerous potentionally high octane offense.

PSU, will be a great final test before the killer finish to the season.

The emergence of Maxx Williams, Donovan Jones, and Derrick Engel has made this offense 10 times better than it was against Iowa.
