Nebraska Home Game?

There were indeed a lot of them. Somewhat reminiscent of the Dome days when Wisky and the Hawks took over half the stadium. Performance on the field kept them in check at least this time.
There was a decent about of husker fans but no where near Dome days where sometimes Gophers had to go silent count at home.

I take such delight in beating Nebraska. 99% of the time I can be counted on to stay classy. But during the fourth quarter last night as the downtrodden red-clad groups of people started to head for the exits, this particular woman locked eyes with me as she was side stepping through the row in front of us. I couldn’t help myself. I threw out a couple “thanks for coming, safe travels” comments to her and her group.

I then sort of felt bad and decided I was going to mention to the people sitting right in front of us about how my kids were the same age as theirs in 2016 when we went to Lincoln to watch Mitch Leidner and the boys lose a close one, and how the Husker fans were so nice.

But, that family soon collectively got up and exited with such speed and efficiency, I never got the chance to bring it up.

I will say every Nebraska fan that I saw was pretty nice. But I guess they didn’t get much to cheer about or be confrontational about.

What a glorious night.

My guesstimate was 10k, so 1 out of every 5 people. When I sat in the upper deck corner, it always seemed to have more visiting fans as that’s where a lot of them sit, but I think it’s just perspective. They weren’t crowing too much before the game. I think I heard one “go big red” while waiting at the entry gate. The red fans around me were respectful, much more so than IA/WI fans that come here.

I’ve always been impressed with Nebraska fans in general. Nice folks and always cordial and respectful. They wear their support (literally) like no other team but they typically aren’t the cocky fans like Iowa or Wisconsin. Always fill about a quarter of our stadium. Had some nice conversations with a few of them on the bus from the fair grounds to the stadium. That GBR chant drives me insane, though. It was pretty heavy in the visitor side concourse before game and into Q1. But it died out pretty quick.

Was surrounded by many Husker fans at the stadium, of course they mostly sat on their hands. However, after the field goal a Nebraska guy behind me goes "Harriet, that does it, we're driving back tonight!" and promptly left the stadium.

I was told by the people I have been sitting by for years to give their Nebraska relatives some crap before we left. I simply said, "It's not so bad, you're used to this by now." It did not go over well at all. They got pretty bent out of shape. Worth it.

The fans are great and nice! They are just delusional.

During the two weekends of Oktoberfest in New Ulm, I saw dozens of Nebraska fans proudly wearing their Husker gear. I always have something Gophers on, so I made a point to talk to all of them. We may take great delight in beating Nebraska, but every fan I spoke with was classy, and we had a delightful repartee. I also ran into a few Iowa State fans and chatted with them— even they hate the Hawkeye fans. As Cyclone fans always tell me, “Hawkeye fans are mean and nasty!”

You need to remember that many Huskers live in the TC so they can find work.

I would say, as an Iowa resident, that Cyclone and Gopher fan bases are pretty similar. I think our disdain toward Iowa trumps theirs though.

Yes!!! This is very true. Nebraska fans are some of the nicest to talk to. One of my favorite exchanges:

NEBRASKA FAN: "We're can't stop the pass".

ME: "Don't worry. We can't pass".

Can't remember which qb that was. It was during the Jerry Kill era. It made the Nebraska fans laugh though.
