NCAA women's hoops proposes coach's challenge

The NCAA women's basketball rules committee proposed that a coach's challenge be required to initiate a video review of out-of-bounds calls and three other types of plays.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA women's basketball rules committee proposed that a coach's challenge be required to initiate a video review of out-of-bounds calls and three other types of plays.

The committee met in Indianapolis this week and voted to recommend the change for the 2025-26 season.

Proposals must be approved by the NCAA playing rules oversight panel, which is scheduled to meet June 10.

The committee also proposed, among other things, setting the shot clock to 20 seconds when, following a dead ball, the offense is awarded the ball in its front court; eliminating the rule that jerseys need to be tucked in; a team technical foul for using excessive timeouts or playing with six players when the ball becomes live; and suspending the player and head coach for one game if the player competes in a game that the player should have missed due to a suspension.

Other rules proposals​

• Setting the shot clock to 20 seconds when, following a dead ball, the offense is awarded the ball in its front court.
• Eliminating the rule that jerseys need to be tucked in.
• Using excessive timeouts or playing with six players when the ball becomes live will become team technical fouls. These violations would count toward team fouls, and the team will be awarded possession at half court following the free throws.
• Allowing players to complete a jump stop when their feet land approximately at the same time. This will be a legal move and would not be considered a travel. Committee members believe this change can increase the accuracy on traveling rulings.
• Allowing defenders multiple one-hand (hot stove) touches on stationary players holding the ball or on a dribbler. These touches would be legal as long as they are not repetitive and do not affect the rhythm, speed, balance and quickness of the dribbler or reroute the offensive player.
• If a player competes in a game that the player should have missed due to a suspension, the player and the head coach would both have to serve a one-game suspension for the next scheduled game.

Please eliminate the jersey tuck rule

The jersey tuck rule is a very good rule. Otherwise, players pull on jerseys. I know they already do it, but with them untucked it makes it even easier for them to get away with it.

Resetting the shot clock to 20 seconds on a out of bounds in the front court is a horrendous idea. If you are playing really good defense, the shot clock is winding down, and you knock the ball out with 2 seconds left, why should the offense get another 20 second reset?

Wait is that a women’s basketball thing? Men’s doesn't reset, only on a violation like a kicked ball. I didn’t think the women’s did either except for a similar violation?

It doesn’t currently. But look at the proposed rule changes, above. That is one of the things that is mentioned.
