Since we are now only a few Sundays away from the Selection by those who determine our collective consciousness as a Basketball Nation ;) over the next 12 months a few Selection Committee questions about those who determine our fate would seem to be in order.

1 Who makes up the Selection Committee?

2 How many members are there?

3 Who selects the Selection Committee?

4 Are some Members 'Automatic' and some Members 'At Large'?

5 Are some Members permanent and some members rotating?

6 How long do they serve on the Committee?

7 Is the NCAA Selection Committee officially bound in any way to follow RPI calculations when choosing between 2 or more teams?

I would think what we are most interested in at this point is how they historically determine the "last four in" and the "first four out". I would think that there is a pool of 10 - 12 teams that generally fall into that category. In looking at the past selections for the category of "last four in" what have likely been the most determining factors?

RPI
SoS (if at all different from RPI)
W-L Record
Polls
Intangibles (hi profile coach - hi profile school - Cinderella qualities)
Politics (school - coach - money - connections etc)

Any other factors considered?

Perhaps a complicated question - however, just trying to determine when looking at the "last four in" will the RPI continue to be the most determining factor?

Every Year They Say "It's The Total Body Of Work"

No one factor is more important than any others.

Gophers have nice W over Butler, Ohio St, Wisky, and Illini.

Gophers have ugly L to IU and Mich.

Interesting that after all the early season hand wringing about the Portland loss, it has not turned out to be a "bad" loss. Their RPI is about 84 and they are 17-9.

I think those "bad" losses you mention and our poor RPI (about 80), are our most serious blemish.

Of course none of that will matter if we don't win 4 or 5 more games IMO.

Go Gophers!

2 How many members are there?

There are 10 members.

3 Who selects the Selection Committee?

The NCAA selects the members.

4 Are some Members 'Automatic' and some Members 'At Large'?

No, but there is a required balance geographically - at least two members representing the the East, Midwest, South, and West regions at any one time.

5 Are some Members permanent and some members rotating?

No, they are not permanent - members are appointed to a 5-year term.

6 How long do they serve on the Committee?

5-years.

7 Is the NCAA Selection Committee officially bound in any way to follow RPI calculations when choosing between 2 or more teams?

No, they look at a multitude of factors.

Thank you for the reply Warrior. Appreciate the info.

Most at large teams fighting for the last 6-8 bids are all probably pretty close, all with a bad loss or two and all with probably some good wins. I would guess that conference strength, RPI, and any head to head results would weigh fairly heavily in seperating those teams from each other, IMO...

I think having a coach with an outstanding reputation might factor into it, too. Not officially and not overtly, but I think having Tubby as our coach will not hurt us come selection Sunday, all other things being equal.
