Well i just played through the season on NCAA 14 for the first time as not the gophers since that oddly always ends in the gophers winning their 8 natty title and us having to rename the forum.
First i used an updated set of rosters and tweaked some player rankings to that the teams had some semblance of balance (ie teams are rated what they should actually be, not the sh!t ea sports throws out. i mean come on, iowa as a 90???? yikes) and edited coaches so that they are true to skill level. any and all injuries were allowed to happen. for instance we lost brock vereen pretty early on so things hopefully will be a little different on that front this year.
But here's how it all shook out.
MN ratings(at season's end after players have improved throughout the season):
overall 84
offense 83
defense 87
we didn't start the season anywhere near that good so it speaks to our overall young roster gaining some game experience.
the games. this part honestly shocked me the way it ended up. so here goes
vs UNLV- W-35-9 Kirkwood rushes for 3 TDs and the D holds unlv to under 200 yards of total offense. just a dominating win in every fashion. a couple of red zone turnovers are the only reason it isn't a massive blowout.
@ NMSU W- 27-10 Kirkwood rolls for 125 yds and 2 more TDs as the D is stout again and the Gophers are up 27-3 in the 3rd and coast to a win.
vs West Ill W 31-3Phil Nelson has 2 TDs and Damien Wilson has a huge day with 12 tackles, a sack, and a FF as the Gophs win easily again.
vs SJSU L 28-24 A painful one as late Nelson pick and 2 missed red zone chances doom us. We pick Fales twice but he throws for 342 yards and 4 TDs for the Spartans.
vs Iowa Rebound W 28-21 Gophers get down 14-0 early but rally back behind kirkwood (164 yds, 2 TDs)and the defense (Int to seal it, 2 sacks, defensive TD). Nelson gets nicked up and Leidner comes in and plays poorly. Bring back the pig!
@ Mich Things almost got a little crazy here. L 20-17 in OT We jumped out to a 17-0 lead (2 Kirkwood TDs) in the early 2nd quarter but the offense fizzled out and in heartbreaking fashion, Devin Gardner scrambles for an 80 yd TD with just over a minute left in the game to send it to OT. Nelson is back and throws a pick in the 1st OT and Mich kicks a FG for the win. The defense shuts down gardner throwing though in impressive fashion as he is 13-22 for just 95 yards. tough loss.
@ NW Redemption W 24-21 in OT Nelson goes down again and Leidner fills in vailiantly sparking a 4th quarter comeback as he scores a 3 yd TD with just over a minute left to send it to OT where Simien (also filling in for Colter) throws a pick and we win it on a 34 yd FG.
vs Neb L 23-13 Martinez is out and we can't get the win. offense is stagnant as nelson goes 12-28 for 106 yds and a pick. D does all they can to keep us in it with 2 picks and several sacks but the offense it just miserable in this one.
@ Ind another nail biterW 27-20 in OT Nelson's woes continue as he goes 20-44 with 2 picks but does counter it with some big plays and 2 TDs. Kirkwood also rushes for 124 yards. we shut down IUs offense and the only reason it was close was because of the picks. this one would a real rough one to have lost.
vs PSU W 20-10 win this one on the ground for sure. Nelson struggles yet again (14-36 for 170, a TD and 3 picks) but Kirkwood rolls for 139, Nelson adds 43, and the other backs combine for another 55 yards. Big shede shows up large in this one with 8 total tackles including 6 TFL with 2 sacks.
vs Wisc We got the axe!! W 16-13 in double OT she wasn't pretty at all but the d absolutely shut down wisky as the one td they scored was defensive. Stave goes 14-35 for 143 and a pick and is sacked 8, yes 8, times. Wilson with 2, Manuel with 2, Amaefula with 1, Cockran with 2, and Salzwedel with 1.
@ Mich St back down to earth for the d L 51-30 We're up after the first half 21-13 via 2 Nelson TDs but we get outscored 38-9 in the 2nd half. we give up 298 yards through the air to maxwell. just an ugly ugly game.
