per Sandell:
It would have seemed like a longshot to many. But this was the situation the Gophers had their sights set on all along.
Despite their missteps this season, with two games remaining, the Gophers have kept themselves in position to control their finish in the race for the Big Ten West Division title. The task ahead is daunting. It would take a win at No. 21 Nebraska on Saturday and another in their season finale against No. 14 Wisconsin, but the Gophers' end goal of reaching the conference title game remains intact.
That is an accomplishment in itself for a program that over the course of the last four seasons has been gradually building towards becoming a legitimate contender in the Big Ten. However, close only counts for so much.
In some respects, the stakes are higher for Minnesota's upcoming matchup against the Cornhuskers than any other point in head coach Jerry Kill's four-year tenure. It's been 11 years since the Gophers have beaten a ranked Big Ten foe on the road. To stay in contention, they would have to do it twice in a row in two of the conference's toughest environments.
