per Sandell:
Even though accuracy and play-making have been an area of inconsistency for both Leidner and his receivers, the Gophers are still finding success on big pass plays at the highest rate they've seen under Kill.
In the last three games, the Gophers have had eight passes go for gains of 35 yards or more, which one higher than their total from any of the previous three seasons. The offense's 20 yards per completion average against Illinois was the highest rate posted in Kill's tenure. Minnesota has totaled 16 completions of 25-plus yards in eight games, tying the group's total from 2013.
The trouble is that the Gophers' passing offense will remain disjointed until they can pair that rise in high-yardage plays with a better overall completion rate. Minnesota is simply not explosive enough to afford to go through long stretches with its passing attack failing to respond to the shortages that periodically arise in the ground game, as was the case at Illinois.
The responsibility for seeing those adjustments and improvements through falls not just on Leidner, but the offense as a whole. After a weekend off, the Gophers' showdown against Iowa next Saturday will be a crucial test of whether or not the offense can get back on track against a defense that forcefully held them at bay a year ago.
