per Sandell:

How much stock one puts into a team's bowl game performance can be argued, but for Minnesota it's all about changing perception. A victory over Missouri -- a strong SEC squad, albeit an undervalued one despite consecutive division titles -- would give the Gophers a needed resume boost, let alone start to erase the program's lack of bowl success from the narrative. Plus, a win has potential of being building block for further success next season.

A loss, however, could diminish, to a certain degree, the progress the program has made this season. Minnesota lost to TCU, 30-7, in September in its biggest nonconference test of the past three seasons. The Gophers are a different team than the one trounced by the Horned Frogs, but they must prove that with on-field results. After letting a first half lead slip away at Wisconsin, the Gophers aren't looking for another game that leaves them thinking "what if?"

No matter what happens on New Year's Day, the Gophers have reached heights long untouched by the program. But as Minnesota players and coaches have acknowledged, ending this season on a high note is essential to keeping the program's upward trajectory on its accelerated track.
