per Sandell:
Caution must be encouraged to avoid making too much out of one victory, especially one as one-sided as what occurred Saturday. But what makes it noteworthy, beyond just the final score, was that Minnesota's season was at crossroads. The embarrassing nature of the loss at Illinois brought about doubts about the Gophers' longevity in the year's stretch run. Another loss would have put Minnesota in jeopardy of possibly finishing out the season on an 0-5 slide, with games against Ohio State, Nebraska and Wisconsin still to come.
Instead, the Gophers picked up a victory when they had to and in a rivalry game that holds lasting significance with their fanbase. Despite the difficulty of its final three games, Minnesota (7-2, 4-1 in the Big Ten) has kept itself in a position to control its own fate in the race for a division title, tied atop the West with Nebraska and Wisconsin.
With Ohio State looming next week, it becomes critical for the Gophers to effectively manage the aftereffects of Saturday's win.
"It's great," cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun said of the victory. "but it could also not work out as well, because guys can get too high. We want to stay even-keel, celebrate this win tonight, but come back tomorrow to prepare for Ohio State ... It'll take a complete win like (today) to win these last three games."
