and other tid bits:

This third installment is late. I apologize. But I wanted to gather some more info from people who have actually had a chance to watch some of Minnesota's first practices before posting this.

For the third year in a row, reporters aren't allowed to watch Gophers men's basketball practice. Trust me, I've sought access many, many times. But that's not Tubby Smith's style.

I talked to a team source Monday morning who gave me this rundown of Gophers men's basketball, after nearly two weeks of practice:

-Royce White is the team's top post presence, and he's playing like a go-to guy in practice sessions.

-Rodney Williams is holding his own and he's going to contribute this season.

-Al Nolen is playing well.

-Justin Cobbs gives the team a lot of extra speed.

-Colton Iverson has had some struggles so far, which isn't surprising when considering Minnesota's upgrade in athleticism.

-Trevor Mbakwe, if he's allowed to play, could be a major difference-maker for the Gophers.

-Devoe Joseph and Lawrence Westbrook are both making strong cases for the starting two-spot.

I guess I'm not surprised by any of this.

After the Midnight Madness scrimmage and conversations with team insiders, and I don't get too excited after a loose scrimmage and a few practices, I think:

-Mbakwe has the potential to be the one of the Big Ten's best power forwards. Can anyone name a true power forward in the Big Ten? DeShawn Sims doesn't mind settling for jump shots. Dallas Lauderdale is all defense. I still see JaJuan Johnson as more of a center. There just aren't a lot of them in this league. Plus, he's a rebounder.

-In the end, White's talent, size, strength and skill set will be too valuable to use in a reserve role. I think Smith will bring him off the bench at the start of the season. But as the Gophers get closer to the 76 Classic, an event that will grant the Gophers a chance to earn every necessary nonconference victory for their NCAA tournament resume, White might be a starter.

-Cobbs is ready to play now. He's 190 pounds as a freshman. One of Joseph's challenges last season and Nolen's two years ago was a lack of strength. I think his physicality alone elevates his status in Smith's eyes.

-I'm so confused about Williams. One minute, I can't figure out how the Gophers will use him. Other times, I think about the Big Ten and its lack of athleticism. Don't get me wrong. The Big Ten has some good, athletic players. But I don't know how many guys have Williams' next-level, did-he-just-do-that, I-didn't-know-a-human-being-could-jump-that-high athleticism. Williams has that. There has to be a way for Minnesota to use that to its advantage, right?

-Ralph Sampson III is one go-to move and a few rebounds per game away from a shot at the NBA. He's going to get a chance. If NBA scouts aren't sold on his game, they'll definitely appreciate his 6-11 frame and genetics. That's not enough to send him to The League. But it's enough to help him earn an opportunity. My prediction: If he averages a double-double this season, he'll get serious consideration from the pros. I don't know if that will happen this season, but the addition of Mbakwe and White will help him by giving him an opportunity to focus on being a center. No more part-time power forward because that's not who he is.

-When I tell my grandkids about Paul Carter, I wonder if I'll describe him this way: "Kids, he was good. He had a solid all-around game. He could dribble, pass, shoot and score in a variety of ways. But he was the odd man out in a deep talent pool." I just get the feeling that Minnesota's new depth will hinder the potential of a few guys, but I think Carter might take the biggest blow.

-I don't know what to make of the slimmed down Westbrook. I appreciated the bulky Westbrook. Bulky Westbrook used his strength to compensate for whatever he lacked in height. Bulky Westbrook had the mass to create space for himself against taller defenders. Slimmed down Westbrook says he hasn't lost any of his strength. We'll see.

Go Gophers!!

If he averages a double-double this season, he'll get serious consideration from the pros.

Going out on a limb I see. Does he know that no one in the Big Ten averaged a double double last year and that only Kris Humphries and DJ White have done so in the Big Ten this decade. Only 15 players in the entire country averaged a double double, and of those only 8 went to what could be considered reputable programs,

No more part-time power forward because that's not who he is.
He needs to talk to Tubby and Ralph about that.

Can anyone name a true power forward in the Big Ten?
Royce White, Ralph Sampson, Mike Davis, Tom Pritchard, Jarryd Cole, Dallas Lauderdale (power forwards can play defense when they aren't hurt), Andrew Jones, Keaton Nankivil, Raymar Morgan, Delvon Roe, Draymond Green

And this, ladies and gentleman, is why Myron occasionally gets torn apart. Lazy, ill informed, and really not that interesting.

Good read, Myron.

But I was hoping to hear you say that Bostick is looking like the player everyone thought he would be last year.

"Ralph Sampson III is one go-to move and a few rebounds per game away from a shot at the NBA. " McHale might not have been the world's best GM, but he was a master of the "one go-to move", and I hope he's finding some time to help out his alma mater and RSIII (if that's allowed.)

"I'm so confused about Williams. One minute, I can't figure out how the Gophers will use him." If Williams' defense is good enough, I can see him wreaking havoc in the Northwestern game on rebounds and putbacks.

Thanks for posting. Pretty solid article and I agree with most of it. I don't agree with the Sampson or Carter assessments though. I agree that Sampson probably will get NBA looks just because of his name and size, although I think he'll never really make it, but he has a longer way to go than Myron makes it sound. He's obviously farther away than just a go to post move and a few rebounds. No way he averages a double double this year (I know he doesn't say that he thinks that will happen). I can't really see his rebounds going up that much with Royce, Mbakwe and Carter.

Carter: "he could dribble, pass, shoot and score in a variety of ways." I think his dribbling ability is a little overrated, he's really not a very good passer, he was the second worst shooter last year next to Nolen (excluding J Williams), and I don't know if you can say he can score in a variety of ways. He could get his shot off in a variety of ways last year, but the few times it went in was off of FT attempts and rebounds that he put back up or just pure hustle. Some of the things Myron said may come true this year, but judging from last year, I can't really agree with that.

Not much in the article really surprised me. For instance, it's not exactly surprising that Royce White is our most skilled post player. I think most folks anticipated he would become the team's best all-around player at some point, whether it was now or in the future. The only thing surprising from this stand point is that he's already established himself in that regard.

Since Williams confuses Myron and he's not sure how to use him, I guess it's a good thing that Tubby is coaching and not Metcalf.

Cobbs looking ready to go doesn't surprise me either. Most reports indicated that he's a pretty darn good player and was underrated for the most part last year. I expect we'll see him play a lot more than we all originally thought.

Mbakwe being a difference maker? Again, no surprise there. Hopefully the legal troubles work out in the end because he's the kind of explosive, athletic and physically powerful power forward we haven't had since Courtney James. And as for Iverson, he's a banger and is a presence in the lane. I'll be more than happy if he gives us between 20-25 minutes, a couple points, rebounds and a few blocks per game.

I actually think that Paul Carter will get a lot of minutes. He looks to have improved a lot over the summer and if he can shows that he can hit that mid-range jumper, he'll play plenty.

I agree with Myron in regards to Westbrook. Not sure how the weight change will affect him. Maybe he'll be quicker? I'm not sure. One thing's for sure; we have more versatility and options to throw out there this year, so Lawrence may need to change up his game a bit. But that pretty much goes for all the returners when working in a bunch of new faces.

In any case, it's nice to be talking basketball again!!!

This is everything I wanted to hear about Gopher basketball. This almost makes up for losing Decker. Almost.

Does he know that only Kris Humphries and DJ White have done so in the Big Ten this decade.

By this decade do you mean the 2000s? Because Reggie Evans averaged a double-double in both 2001 and 2002.

Royce White, Ralph Sampson, Mike Davis, Tom Pritchard, Jarryd Cole, Dallas Lauderdale (power forwards can play defense when they aren't hurt), Andrew Jones, Keaton Nankivil, Raymar Morgan, Delvon Roe, Draymond Green

I think Myron's point stands. That list doesn't exactly drip with future NBA all-stars. It is a relatively unimpressive list. And, sorry, Raymar Morgan is a small forward, not a power forward.

Nice read Myron. Can't wait for the season to start!

Did I miss something? Did Damian Johnson get hurt? The guy averaged 9.8 points while being our best defensive player and suddenly he won't see the court because of royce white? Royce is good, but Damian is set for another good season.

Thanks, I thought it was an interesting article, though the strib would probably appreciate a link rather than a cut and paste.

Other questions:

- how is Bostick's defense? Does he have a chance to be the stud we thought he was?

- how is Hoffarber's shooting? A key to our season IMO>

Also, it seems like if no one gets hurt, it would make sense to redshirt one guy, probably Williams. How the heck are we going to play 13 guys? I suppose it doesn't make sense for Tubby to announce right now that someone is likely to redshirt. Better to throw the balls out, see who's got it, and make a decision once the season gets underway.

I'm sure Damian will be back and play a very similar role to what he did last year. He will probably be good for a few blocks, a few steals and just all-around strong defense, not to mention some boards and baskets. Damian just doesn't have the physical presence that Trevor and Royce do, as far as I can tell. Not to mention, it is much more exciting for Myron to talk about the newcomers than all the old guys.

How many games can a player play in before not being allowed to Redshirt?

Paul Carter is the best shooter we have over 6'6" and is our best returning rebounder. He is listed at 6'8" but I think he is the only player on he roster with an accurate height listed. He doesn't look much more than an inch shorter than Ralph when they stand next to each other. He will get minutes.

You can't play in any games in order to be eligible for a redshirt. This is different from a medical redshirt, which can be granted if a player has only participated in a small % of games.

What's your beef with Myron? I thought this was a good summary considering he prefaced everything by saying that he was getting second hand info because he couldn't attend practices.

He is criticizing Myron for comments like the one about Ralph's NBA potential. Saying the NBA will be interested in Ralph if he averages a double-double is number one on my list for the most obvious statement of the year.

Hey FTB, have you ever looked into securing yourself a seat on press row for the games? I only ask because I saw that Steven Sports guy sitting down there during Tubby's tipoff. Maybe games are different but if he can sit down there, I definitely think you could get a spot. I'd be much more interested in your take at court level than others currently covering the team. You go to all the games anyway.

There is a no cheering rule down there. I'm not interested in that.

White might be the guy the team needs. A go to guy in a must have situation. The only time I saw him play was in the State Finals last year. He seemed to stay back and let the team play. When it got close I thought he completely took over the game. I can't think of a Minnesota kid that could turn on the burners like that. Humphries maybe, but he needed the ball all the time.

It is going to be hard to get playing time. I dream of a Mbwake, White, Johnson, Bostick, and a point guard line up and let them run.

Though his game isn't perfectly suited to this role, Johnson is capable of playing wing if need be, allowing us to run a very long, very athletic front of Sampson, Mbakwe and Johnson if we choose. Throw in White and Carter, and you can run a variety of looks on the front three that are loaded with athleticism.
