Myron blog: Tubby's agent: Coach "absolutely" will sign extension before next year

Follow up tweet from Doogie:

"To piggy-back on @GophersBBGuy 's report... the word from one of Tubby's acquaintances last week was that he'll soon sign a 2-yr extension."

Go Gophers!!

Clearly they are chiseling this extension in granite tablets and the workers doing it are Unionized. That's the only way a simple contract extension can take a year +.

I know people aren't happy with Tubby right now, but in the long run, it will be huge if we can get an extension from him, first off from a recruiting aspect, they'll know he's here (obviously a contract doesn't necessarily mean that, but still...), and just for the sake of not having to deal with another major hire in one of our major sports as we have had in the last four years, stability will be good. I really hope he sticks around for a while, cause I think in the end, he will have success here.

I firmly believe this will be Tubby's last job. It's a matter of how long he wants to coach

At 60 years old there won't be as much interest and does he really want to start a new project.

With the pride and competitive nature of a coach like him, I don't think he would want to leave here on losing note.

I'd guess (don't know) he'll coach his last season when he turns 65. That would be 2016-17.

Clipped:

Gophers coach Tubby Smith has a contract that expires after the 2013-2014 season. And according to his agent, he plans to stay even longer.

Ricky Lefft, a South Carolina attorney who's represented Smith for years, said he expects Smith to sign an extension prior to the 2011-12 season.

"Absolutely," he said when I caught up with him at halftime of the Gophers' 66-63 loss to Penn State Sunday.

The university and Smith first discussed a possible extension last year. Both Smith, who makes $1.8 million per year, and athletic director Joel Maturi said recently that lawyers for both sides were working out the details.

But it's been more than a year since those negotiations started. The delay has fueled speculation about Smith's future.

Lefft, however, said it's just a matter of time before Smith's extension becomes official.

"It’s in the works," he said.

Prior to our brief chat about the status of Smith's extension, I asked him if his client planned to stay at the University of Minnesota after this season.

"What do you mean by that? Yeah. He’s got a contract," he replied.

Also, next year will be Tubby's first year with the team consisting of all his recruits.
