Myron blog: Big Ten Media Day news and notes

Mr. Medcalf has 2 Purdue players on his 1st team ballot one of them being his pick for Player of the Year - yet has the team finishing in the middle of the pack?

MNBoiler, you and everyone else knows that Purdue team is not NEARLY as good without Hummel (who was/is their best player). A fair prediction IMHO.

Purdue did OK without Hummel late in 2010 season because Kramer and Grant stepped up.

Both are gone this year.

I love point #4 from this blog about Tubbys press conference...

4. He expects Rodney Williams to be a key part of the nucleus on the 2010-11 squad. "They'll have to carry us."

So what? They still have TWO All-American candidates and projected POY in the conference (according to Myron). If Purdue finishes 5th or worse in the Big Ten it will be considered an absolute disaster of a season.

When was the last time the Big Ten POY played for a team that finished 5th or lower? I honestly don't know. Just curious.

BTW, MNBoiler is a different poster.

1. Michigan State: Izzo's back. Nuff said.

No wonder why Myron will never make it past being a blog writer.

F Jared Sullinger (Ohio State...Youngster might end up as first team All-America. Don't sleep on him.)

Nobody is sleeping on him, you are not telling us anything here... no need to pretend that you are.

Bolier fans. Johnson and Moore are you whole team. Dont pretend pattrick bade and D.J. byrd are above average, its quite the opposite. You have no one to score besides those 2 and maybe lewjack. without hummel grant and kramer, you are weaker defensively, and a worse shooting team.

You lost all credibility when you mention Lewis Jackson as a possible scorer.

OK, I really was curious. The Big Ten POY Award has been given out since 1984. Twice the award had co-winners (1998-1999 & 1999-2000). Here's a breakdown of where the POY winner's team placed in the conference standings.

1st - 16
2nd - 8
3rd - 2
5th - 1 (AJ Guyton 1999-2000)
6th - 1 (Dennis Hopson 1986-1987)

So, I guess it is possible for Johnson to win the POY award even if Purdue finished 5th but it's not likely.

I expect the BT standings to be top heavy AND bottom heavy, similar to last year when Wisconsin finished 4th yet had something like a 14-4 or 13-5 record (don't want to look it up but it was one of those 2 records).

My point being that Purdue could finish 5th and still have a 13-5 or 12-6 record. That's a good enough record IMO to have someone win POY. I could easily see the following records for each place in the standings this year:

1. 14-4
2. 14-4
3. 14-4
4. 13-5
5. 12-6
6. 11-7
7. 8-10
8. 5-13
9. 4-14
10. 3-15
11. 1-17

The BT will be the best conference in CB this year but don't mistake that for parity in the conference. Iowa, Indiana, Penn St, and Michigan are light years behind the top 5 and they'll all struggle to win 4 or 5 games in the conference if my prediction is correct. That will inflate the records for those at the top of the conference.

For the record, I see Purdue battling Illinois for 3rd in the conference. Also for the record, I see Minnesota battling Wisconsin for 5th and I see Mich St and OSU battling for 1st. The records per position in the standings above aren't my prediction. It's just that it's possible (like last year) to happen. Not probable for a 5th place team to have the POY but still possible this year.

No, a lot of people are "sleeping on" Sullinger. Just read the Illinois and Wisconsin message boards. There are a lot of fans out there that think he won't be very good this season. They use the logic of "everything he's ever accomplished has been against high school players and freshmen do not dominate against more experienced college players, so he will not dominate in college as a freshmen," essentially ignoring the fact that the top freshmen every year have typically been among the sport's top players since the 1 & done era began in 2007. As I said before, there have been two freshmen AP All-Americans every season except one in the four seasons of the 1 & done era. 2010-11 should be no exception - it is more likely that there will be 3 frosh All-Americans this season than 1 in my opinion.

One of Myron's tweets while Tubby was speaking said...
Big Ten: Says Rodney Williams, upperclassmen the "nucleus of our team." "They'll have to carry us."

Don't be so quick to jump down his throat, geez...

sorry matt,
I didn't know I was supposed to check his twitter before I read the article. (sarcasm!)

Sullinger was a monster in the HS all-star game I watched him play in and I can't believe people are looking past him. He WILL be 1st Team All Conference as a FR and I can't wait to see Mbakwe go toe to toe with him this season.

Penn State

For some reason I'm not willing to dismiss Penn State for the upcoming season. Not saying the Nitts will be top half of the Big Ten, but two years ago they won a lot of close games (granted, they also had Cornley & Pringle to go along with Battle) and nearly made the NCAA Tournament, while last year the bottom fell out while seemingly losing a lot of those same close games.

There is some Big Ten experience there to go along with Battle. ... Jackson, Brooks, Jones, etc. I think they have a chance to be competitive, even with some of the top- and middle-tier teams. We'll see.

While you're dissing Myron that's almost an exact quote. He said the returning juniors and seniors along with Williams would be the nucleus and Trevor would play a big role
