What's up, Gophers fans?

First, the bad news. Gophers recruit Naadir Tharpe, a talented point guard from Brewster Academy (Wolfeboro, N.H.), committed to Kansas Tuesday, according to multiple reports.

Now, the good news.

Memphis prep star Andre Hollins, a 6-2 combo guard for White Station, is still available. And his high school coach, Jesus Patino, said Wednesday that he expects Hollins to make a final decision after he returns from a weekend trip to Stanford Sunday.

"He’s going to go and visit Stanford on Thursday and then he will [probably] take seven to 10 days," Patino said Wednesday.

Patino said Hollins, who visited the Gophers last month, doesn't have a favorite among Stanford, Harvard, Minnesota, Mississippi or Auburn, the five schools on his final list.

Hollins is listed as a shooting guard on most recruiting websites but the three-star guard on Rivals.com can play point guard, Patino said.

"If they want to slow it down … he can do it," Patino said. "If they want to push it, he can do it."

Patino said he recently created a presentation for Hollins that listed the pros and cons of the five schools. One of the benefits of attending Minnesota, Patino told Hollins, would be the opportunity to play for a "proven" coach.

Stanford's Johnny Dawkins is in his third season. Auburn's Tony Barbee will begin his inaugural season with the Tigers next month. Tommy Amaker is in his fourth year at Harvard but he's been a head coach for 13 seasons. And Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy is set to begin his fifth season with the Rebels.

"The other schools have young coaches," he said.

Patino said he's known Tubby Smith for years. During an earlier interview, he said he told Hollins that Minnesota's staff would look out for him.

"I know what kind of person [Smith] really is and I think that would’ve been somewhere that Andre ... for sure they’re going to take care of him for the right reasons," he said.

Go Gophers!!

This is encouraging. We really need to get this guy, otherwise our PG situation is going to look pretty ugly next year.

Sounds like a coach that cares and wants to get it right for Hollins. I like our chances at getting him.

Sounds like Tubby has good connections in Memphis.

Chasson Randle has not decided (may pick Stanford). Will Andre wait for Chasson or take the sure playing time and pick Minnesota?

Hollins isn't a very sought-after talent (non-athletic scholarship Harvard and Ole' freakin Miss are in his final list), but don't be fooled, Tubby will succeed with these type of players. Coach Smith started with two GREAT classes that included a bunch of 4-star players like RS III, Devoe, RWilliams and Royce, but he's struggled to even catch the attention of anything higher than 3-star players since, WHICH IS FINE. I think the program is in good shape. Minnesota will never be the first place top-level players will think of (unless they are from the state).

His interest in Harvard stems from its superb academics. Ole Miss is a "local" school not far from Memphis.

Marcus still says Stanford is the favorite for Hollins:

White Station (Tenn.) High School guard Andre Hollins said last month after visiting the Gophers that he would make a decision following his last visit this week to Stanford.

I heard before that Stanford was likely his favorite, although Hollins hasn't said that publicly. He's capable of sharing the point guard role with Devoe Joseph next season if he becomes a Gopher.

If Minnesota misses on Hollins, then there really aren't any legitimate options out there right now. I heard that the Gophers were in Georgia recently checking out some junior college point guard talent, but there were no solid targets to emerge.

One thing Tommy Amaker can do is recruit. If Hollins for some reason picks Harvard, he wouldn't even be the highest ranked recruit in his class. Harvard already has a verbal from Wesley Saunders, ranked #80 by Rivals in the 2011 class.

Stanford is a solid program and already has a strong recruiting class for this year... From an outsiders perspective, Stanford and Minnesota are a push as far as programs go....
