MVPs thus far - Who ya got?

On work avoidance strategies so busy thinking about the world's most improved college football team and how proud I am of this magical season.

Decided on my offensive MVPs thus far - Cobb first with Maxx a close second and someone from the OL third (not sure who to single out - would have gone Christenson up to the injury)

I've got Pete Mortell as my Special teams MVP with honourable mentions to Marcus Jones, Hageman (blocked FG v UNLV set tone for season IMHO) and the entire kick coverage team (I realise this is almost everyone - but I think our special teams play has been great this year and so much better than last).

Really not sure at all how to prioritise our defensive stars. Hageman has flashed first round qualities, Wilson has been my Mr consistency second half of the season, Hill has made monster big plays, really impressed with Murray, the likes of Johnson, Thompson and Cockran have massively exceeded my expectations of how good they are, and if he stood for election (and I was an American citizen) I would vote Brock Vereen into the White House.

Just wondering who you all got as your MVPs.
 

Offense - David Cobb, Special Teams - Peter Mortell, Defense - Rashede Hageman
 


Freshman of the year - Max Williams

Hardest working - Logan Hutton

Hutton has became one of my favorites.
 



How about some love for Hawthorne? Mortell had a great game against PSU, but Hawthorne has been solid.
All 3 specialists, Punter Kicker and long snapper have been solid.
 

Don't forget Eric Murray.
 

Maybe not MVP but Manual And Vareen have really had nice years.
 




This is especially tough because we really have gotten more out of the team than any individual. Still, Cobb is undeniable. On D - I have been digging Aaron Hill.
 

Rasheed has played really well when he's been in there, but he seems to play half the snaps at most. To me, that's inexplicable, unless he's hurt and they aren't saying anything.

Thus, to me, the MVPs on defense could be Murray, Wilson, Hill, Rasheed, Cockran, and even Vereen. All have been more than solid this year, but again, to me, Rasheed can't be the sole MVP because he's not on the field enough.
 

The crazy thing about this season's team is I like so many individual players. Eric Murray has become our best corner yet still goes hard on punt coverage. Kid is tough - was vomiting on the field on Saturday and came back in a couple plays later. Manuel has been a revelation and so has Wilson. Hill and Vereen are two of the best leaders in this program in recent memory. Nelson played great for four straight games and is a tough kid. Jones is fun to watch. The list could go on! But in the end, I think Cobb, Mortell, and Hageman are the most valuable players in their respective units.
 

Cobb is the easy choice on Offense
Mortell is pretty easy on special teams

Defense is a bit trickier but would probably go with either Hageman or Murray. Vereen, Manual and Hill have all be solid as well though and would deserve consideration.

Agree with this, although I'd vote for Cockran on D, but all have had outstanding years.
 

D= Hill hands down...Murray, Cockran, Wilson, Hageman all toss ups for distant second.
O= Cobb a pleasant surprise
ST=Mortell
 

Lots of good choices, but I feel like Philip Nelson deserves some consideration for O-MVP. During the 4 game winning streak he threw 7 td's to zero int's and ran for an additional 3 scores. Keep in mind that he also had to lead a big drive against Indiana after the huge was blown. This is a true Sophomore QB whose best weapons are a former walk on WR and a red shirt freshman TE. I realized he's played poorly in other games, but that 4 game streak is what made the season a success and he was excellent during it.

Unsung Hero: Josh Campion

Defense: Hagemen (he's made the most big plays)
Close 2nd: Wilson
Unsung Hero: Cockran

Murray has had a nice year, but has he made big plays? Even in limited time, Hagemen is having the most impact on the game up front. Wilson has been great, but he doesn't play as much vs. spread teams and that's kept his numbers down a bit. He had nice games against PSU & Wisconsin and i look for a another big game from him against MSU.

If we're talking big plays, I give it to Aaron Hill. fumble recovery against Indiana and pick 6 against Wisconsin.
 

Aaron Hill. Game after game of solid performance. Played with great heart.
 

until our dbs start turning looking for the ball and we stop getting all these pi penalties I cant vote for a db as dmvp... eric murray will be a lock down corner in the not so distant future...

but my dmvp is deff hill... omvp is the oline... huge difference in our trench play stmvp... mortell... he has had a great year punting
 

Offense - Phillip Nelson & David Cobb

*Nelson for the fact that during our 4 game B1G Ten win streak, he played some really good football and we saw what our team can do when he is playing very well. Cobb because, well, let's face it, he is our first 1,000 yard rusher since 2006.

Defense - Hageman, Aaron Hill & Brock Vereen

*Hageman , well, because he is Optimus Prime. Hill has made some big plays on defense for us in almost every game. Brock Vereen because he has been the anchor of our secondary this year and has played quite well.
 

O- Cobb and Nelson
D- Hag and Wilson
ST- Coverage units

**I initially had Cobb alone for the O. But, I was thinking about our 4 game B1G win streak and I felt that if we took Nelson out (and inserted Leidner) it would have been harder to replicate the results than if we took Cobb out (and inserted Kirkwoodland and Williams)

I agree with this 100%.
 

So Hill has made 2 big plays and he's our "big play" guy? I guess he's 1 up on James Manuel.

When i think of big plays, i'm talking about tackles for loss, sacks, passes defended or batted down, blocked kicks, affect on the opponenets gameplan. Hagemen has been consistently good all year, and great at times. He's been disruptive at times. He's made the the opponents adjust to him at times. I don't think we could say that about any other player on D. He's our only real impact player. Hill has had a nice year, but nobody is running away from him. Murray has been good at times and has a bright future, but they're not exactly afraid to throw at him.

UNLV: 4 Tackles, 1 Pass Break Up
NMSU: 10 Tackles, 1 TFL, 1 FR Returned 50 yards for TD
WIU: 6 Tackles
SJSU: 4 Tackles, 0.5 TFL, 1 INT returned 16 yards
IOWA: 5 Tackles, 1.0 TFL
MICH: 4 Tackles
NWU: 5 Tackles, 1 TFL, 1 Sack
NEB: 5 Tackles, 1 Forced Fumble
IND: 5 Tackles, 1 Fumble Recovered
PSU: 4 Tackles, 1 TFL
WISC: 6 Tackles, 1 Forced Fumble, 1 INT for TD

I would say that is a pretty darn impressive stat line so far this year. Not to mention, he recovered the fumble to seal the 'W' vs. IND. and returned another for a TD against NMSU. Just saying.

Think about this, from 2009-2011, the only linebacker commit still with the team are Jephte Matilus and James Manual who came in as a DB. Aaron Hill was a 2009 walk-on.

Not to mention his on the field leadership. He's the only guy in the front 7 that plays in all situations!!!! His consistency, splash plays, and leadership make it a no-brainer in my book.
