per the Spokesman Recorder:

Diversity in the University of Minnesota’s athletics administration is still a four-letter word: None.

When oft-asked about diversity, Teague acts like I’m his Ginger Rogers and he’s Fred Astaire as he dances around the subject. “[I want to] have more color in our department,” said the Gopher AD. “It’s important to me, and I feel good about that.”

Yet his lack of racial hirings to date speaks volumes more than his hollow words. Unless Minnesota gets drop-dead serious about improving workforce diversity in their athletics administration and stops parroting sound bytes in an effort to placate this reporter, the school will continue to earn dismally failing grades.

Go Gophers!!

I have an idea. Stop placating that reporter. We hire the best person for the job, period.

Our swim coach is from North Dakota.

Our women's track coach is from Indiana.
Our women's golf coach is from Ohio.
Our women's gymnastics coach is from Illinois.
Our women's hockey coach is from Ontario.
Our women's rowing coach is from California.
Our women's soccer coach is from Missouri.
Our women's softball coach is from Texas.

Best I can figure is that we have too many coached from Ohio.

I thought 'Diversity' was an old Civil War era wooden ship. No?

Why should Teague trouble himself with such antiquated nautical issues in a landlocked state?

Well, by my count, Teague has made about eight 'major' hires since arriving on campus, including coaches and high level administrators.

Men's Basketball Coach: Richard Pitino (white male)
Women's Soccer Coach: Stephanie Golan (white female)
Women's Tennis Coach: Chuck Merzbacher (white male)
Deputy AD: David Benedict (white male)
Executive AD: Beth Goetz (white female)
Senior Associate AD: Chris Werle (white male)
Associate AD: Mike Ellis (white male)
Assistant AD Marketing: Corrie Sears (white female)

The three females represent minorities and absolutely qualify as diversity hires. That means about 40% of the AD's hires are clearly "diverse." Throw in the Quincy Lewis hire in the development office, which was a job Norwood created for Quincy out of nothing, and that number gets to 45%.

That's not terrible.

Never heard of the Minneapolis Spokesman-Recorder.
