Morning y'all.....so, since about half of our team has jumped into the portal in the last couple of days, how about

I'm sure there's some hyperbole here, but how many are we actually talking about?
i think we're up to 18 now, but aside from 3 starters, the rest are backups. but the steady stream of announcements is exhausting. we'll see who we can pull in from the portal too............

With 105 roster limits. If you are not a starter or contributor, you likely won't find a spot. Has to be a bit awkward going back to coaches that recruited you in the past and asking for a spot.

Starters are likely getting paid and/or looking for a better team.

yeah it's a particularly challenging i'm sure for coaches this year with covid years phasing out and trying to essentially rebalance your classes as you'd want to wean from every year to keep your depth roughly similar across all positions. would envision the portal will be insane this year with an awful lot of players left without a dance partner.

We used to have a qb that was a 7-7 mvp! Ryan Burns just this week said to someone ‘don’t get me started on 7-7 football.’

It's almost like you don't even know who's on your team anymore from one season to the next.
Has become pointless to really try and project your roster out more than a year or so because with the roster churn there is going to be a ton of changes from one season to the next.

Has been interesting around here to see the evolution as it relates to high school recruiting. This board used to be covered in threads about star rankings and recruiting. This year, early signing day was almost an afterthought. Heck, I didn't even know it was signing day until I saw a thread pop up about it. Now it is all about the portal.

Part of why Minnesota is 5-0* in bowls under Fleck has been a relative lack of transfer departures from the program and few bowl opt-outs. Minnesota has to this day only lost one player they really wanted to keep in the Portal/NIL era (Bucky Irving - Oregon) and even he wasn't projected to be a starter the next season.

* Gophers are on a 6 7 game bowl winning streak but we'll omit the one where they tried to boycott the Holiday Bowl as an entire team under Tracy Claeys, but decided to play and won anyway.

Isn't it 7? With the 15 Quick Lane Bowl?

Every game I watch, especially with basketball this year, I'm pulling up opponents rosters just for the times I say to myself "wait, that guy played somewhere else last year, where did they come from"?

It's turned into a trivia game.

I've given up on Gopher Basketball from the Portal. I was finally getting back in toward the end of last season, was excited all 5 starters were coming back, and then poof...Dawson Garcia and a pickup game team.

At this point when you watch the broadcast the announcers are constantly pointing out where a player transferred from, almost feels rare when a player isn't a transfer from somewhere.

It would be funny if during one of the NFL intros where they have the player say their name and where they went to school if some player with multiple stops decided to list them all. Some players are on their 3rd or 4th college team by the time they finish.

Friend,

We were in a dire situation leading up to last season’s Quick Lane Bowl. Our stating QB declared to transfer and our backup was set to venture out to the desert somewhere to get married. That is, until we were able to coax him back for one more game for a cool $30000 (allegedly).

What I’m getting at is that you and your fellow Hokies might want to get busy fundraising.

Turkeys are only 49 cents a pound at Publix right now. That's a whole offensive line for like $750

we change up our game and make it a 7-on-7 flag football matchup? That would give us a handful of subs if we needed them......D1 collegiate athletics is a complete cluster-f.
We've felt your pain via the injury bug. With that said, I still think that both teams are going to bring their A games.

In fairness, cancelling or delaying wedding plans can be very costly.

I have seen the gophers beat Nebraska with like 31 players or something

So let’s hope the gophers aren’t Nebraska

Haha why would we omit that one? We played with a skelton crew especially on defense, and pulled off a great upset!!

We have 10 players in the portal. Not exactly half the team.
EDIT: I guess the OP is a VT guy.

There is no way he got anything close to $30K to play in that game.

In my opinion this is the new normal. I would guess we fall in the middle of the pack across FBS.

If you are a backup that wants to play you would enter the portal too.

I'm not panicking
