When is the last time there has been this much optimism surrounding the Timberwolves and the University of Minnesota men's basketball team entering the same season?

Both have had infrequent moments where they grabbed the casual fans' attention. The Timberwolves win over Sacramento on the way to the Western Conference Finals was fun. The Gophers' run to the Final Four is still in our memory bank, even if not in the record books. I can't remember, though, the last time both have seemingly been built to last like they are right now.

• The University of Minnesota men's basketball team is also drawing some interest right now with current Gophers playing in the Twin Cities Pro Am.

I have to admit that it's been fun to see some of these highlights on Twitter. The league is basically a series of pickup games with a lot of talented players, but it's still interesting to see how newcomers like Jamir Harris and Isaiah Washington perform against some good competition.

By all accounts, it sounds like Washington has been as advertised. His ball handling and ability to finish at the rim should be a lot of fun to watch this winter.

Washington might serve as Nate Mason's primary backup at the point, but it would be fun to watch them get some time together in the backcourt. That's a duo that would lack size, but could really get up and down the court. There's so many talented pieces on this roster right now, and it will be interesting to see how head coach Richard Pitino uses everyone with his lineups.
