Best value pick among the defensive backs (at least according to how these mock drafts have things):

Minnesota’s Antoine Winfield Jr. He doesn’t have great length with him only about 5-9, but he’s got excellent speed. He ran 4.45 in the 40 in Indy. He’s a good tackler and has a great nose for the ball. The son of a former NFL star, Winfield Jr. is just a very savvy guy. One of his old coaches in college told me that he needed the least amount of coaching to be ready of any player he’s ever been around. Winfield Jr. knew all about eye control and discipline early in his days with the Gophers and made plays from the moment he stepped on the field.

Since it’s a pay site, not all will have access, but here’s the link for those who do:

he's on the front page of ESPN as part of draft buildup as well

They had Antoine on one of the screens of behind the scenes going into break. Come on Vikes!

Is Jeff Gladney really that better than AWJr? The report is he had a knee injury and character concerns

It said he had a knee injury his senior year of his school.

I think the deal is that the Vikings really needed a cover corner and Winfield does not really fill that need. He's a safety with some potential in nickel coverage. Right now they are set at safety though they will probably need one in 2021.

Unless we move Harris. I think that is our only hope for getting Winfield in this draft.

I liked that fact that his name was repeatably displayed on Mel Kiper's "top five best available," ending the night at #2. Safeties (along with running backs for the most part) didn't turn out to be a round 1 pressing need this year.

The Vikings disappoint me, as always.
I have a bet with my son that the Packers will take both Tyler Johnson (sorry...TJ6) AND AWjr11 (did I do that right?) just to make life miserable for me, personally. Green Bay hates me.

Shama chimes in:

Former Gopher All-American safety Antoine Winfield Jr. will likely be chosen in the second round of tonight’s continuing NFL Draft. Dan O’Brien, now head football coach at St. Thomas Academy, was a Gophers assistant coach when Minnesota recruited him. Winfield was only a three-star recruit out of high school in Texas but O’Brien said the Gopher coaches knew after the first couple of practices the freshman was going to be an impact player.

“He just had fantastic instincts,” O’Brien said. “It seemed like he would read the quarterback as good as any kid we had, even though he was just a freshman. He was one of those players that just was always in the right spot.”

Go Gophers!!

I'm fully prepared to be extremely upset when the Packers draft my favorite Gopher ever (TJ).

That would be THE WORST if Love does turn out to be that 15 year guy and they pick up TJ to throw to him for a decade, to boot.

Someone is gunna get a steal with Winfield at this point.

Must be his size scaring teams away. Stupid IMO. He’ll prove em wrong.
