MN Daily: Change in culture aids Gophers' academic turnaround
Minnesota posted one of the best Academic Progress Rate scores in NCAA history for the 2011-12 season.

Kill said there hasn’t been a magical formula to the first-year success. He said he and his staff placed an emphasis on players’ actions in the classroom and the overall culture of academics.

“We’ve just made them go to classes,” Kill said. “It’s amazing what happens when kids go to class, are on time and do what they’re supposed to.

“That’s how that turnaround came about.”

Go Gophers!!

There are few rules I live my life by, but one of them is this:

Life is a lot easier when you show up every day.

Coach Kill is all business when it comes to academics. The increase in APR at the UM is no surprise as he did the same at NIU.

NIU scores were 914, 930 when he took over and raised them to 947, 975, and 987. In 2009, the team APR was 997 which is amazing.

It interesting that the latest NIU APR has dropped to 936 and four year average of 974, which will likely drop next year.

I think Coach Kill recruits kids who are decent student, stay in school and realize the importance of obtaining a degree. This helps create a more stable nucleus and team depth. This is a huge upswing compared to Brewster and especially Mason where there was pretty much a revolving door.

Hadn't invested in a stadium or much of anything else in the Football Program.“I don’t think our institution was an outlier in the beginning stages,” said JT Bruett, the Gophers’ director of compliance. “There wasn’t a lot of awareness of APR and what it was about at first, so all sports for APR scores tended to be a little lower to start..." Things are different in so many ways today, Bayfield. And, that's a good thing. Coach Kill is doing a great job with all the resources he has, the support from the administration and the constant scrutiny from the NCAA that insures all programs he competes with are following the same rules. It is GREAT!

This might be our niche. Recruit the good student, good citizen athlete. Get parents to support their good kids attending UM. Build a team of four and five year players who play well together, make few mistakes, and execute.

We'll have to see how it all plays out, won't we fansincethefifties. I think that the end of the second season and the very beginning of the third season is just a bit premature to try to identify a trend. You know: a trend is the total number of Conference wins vs. the total number of Conference losses PLUS the total number of overall wins vs the total number of overall losses. Don't worry: they will keep track of that count on the B1G NETWORK for us so I won't have to worry about you trying to cook the books and you won't have to worry about me playing fast and loose with the actual NUMBERS...you know...the ONLY numbers that can tell us how the trends are playing out. Then we can compare the numbers. Mason took over a very tough situation. That Brewster took over a tough situation. Kill took over a tough situation. He has had the new stadium from day one but Nebraska is now a conference member. At the end of year number three we will run the Conference numbers...the total win numbers...It should be very interesting. Perhaps we will be a bit closer to identifying trends...perhaps we will not...

I really hope Coach Kill wins this contest between the Mason record...the Brewster record and himself. That would be FANTASTIC!

Gopher football '11-'12 APR of 994 one of highest on record for any NCAA program

That 2011-12 994 score is the highest single-season score in the history of Gophers football and is also one of the highest scores on record for any NCAA football program. Well done by the Gopher players, coaches, team support staff, athletic director's office, and the great counselors at the McNamara Academic Center for student-athletes.

Link did not connect, but the main topic of the 994 APR is an awesome achievement. Keep it up with Kill's leadership.

Coach Kill knows what he is doing when it comes to academics. His 209 UNI squad posted a 997 APR so this is nothing new for him.

Focus on academics was a major concern when he arrived and, under his leadership, he turned things around after years of lip service from Brewster and Mason.

This is a great, great achievement. I'm convinced that Kill & Co. are leading us to bigger and better things.

Outstanding job and everyone should be proud of their achievement.

Priority to establish and maintain solid academic programs was a problem at the UM under Mason and APR basically put all schools on the same standard back to 2004. Most BIG schools made immediate gains in their scores but not the UM, as well as Purdue and MSU. Since then, Michigan has dipped somewhat but the UM is the only BIG to be placed under APR penalties which resulted in loss of scholarship(s). Its very obvious that Kill has the Gophers in a much better position than the other mentioned schools as the majority of the BIG as we move forward.

The Gary Russell situation was a big black mark as well as guys like Jehwan Edwards. And the revolving door was very busy, especially under Mason and I am guessing that there were a good number of transfers that did not graduate. Plus there were numerous off field issues that gave the program a black mark under Mason and Brewster.

My gut tells me that the Russell situation may not have occured under Coach Kill to the degree that it did. And Edwards was told to pack his bags when Kill arrived. Coach Kill is not about lip service when it comes to academics and student/athlete behavior. He expects the players to meet his standards and is not shy to put players on the sidelines until they take necessary steps to improve their status.

You always refer to the W/L records of past coaches Wren and place Mason on a pedestal above Brewster and Kill. Its only fair then to use the APR records rather than offering excuses for Mason's very poor performance with student academics, player behavior and retention. These major issues are finally under under control thanks to Coach Kill. And that is a very good thing.

Bayfield: with a straight face, try to tell me that the Conference W/L Conference record didn't get Brewster fired. Try to tell me it didn't get Wacker fired. In the end, try to tell me it didn't get Gutey fired. Salem fired. Stoll fired. In the end, it even got Murray Warmath fired. You can mention Coach Mason...I get much hate and discontentment directed my way IF I should ever have the gall to mention that name...and you KNOW it... ; 0 )

NOTHING will save Coach Kill from the same fate as those other coaches unless he finds a way to win more conference football games and be more competitive within the conference. Believe me, I like Coach Kill and really want him to be at the U as long as HE wants to be at the U. But, I'm not quite so sure what to make of his support levels from our new norwood. Our new norwood is a sly one in many ways. Or, at least he apparently fancies himself that way based upon some comments people have made on this board... ; 0 )

One thing that is certain though Bayfield: you sure do LOVE to rip on former Coach Mason. Even seven years after he has been gone. Coach Mason coached during the era he coached in. It was different than it is now. There is a new stadium. There are NCAA mandates that forced the U of M to provide more academic support. Coach Kill is doing a great job enforcing the NCAA mandates and utilizing all the new resources. What was is different than what is Bayfield...but...play it any way you wish. Personally, I hope Coach Kill really outdoes that coach that you dislike so much. I don't want Coach Kill's fate to be placed in the hands of our new norwood. I get the sense that norwood really does like to make bold moves...

So, what kind of record are you predicting for my Gophers for the 2013 season? I've got 'em at 7-5 or at least 6-6 with a bowl invite. I will attend any bowl they might be invited to and will also be at the Northwestern game this season, along with every home game, God willing.

And, I'd like to see the team add a few more points to their fantastic score! And at least 3 Conference wins this season would do wonders for Coach Kill's standing with our new norwood...imho...

I very glad that Coach Kill and his staff are emphasizing academics. The APR increase is an impressive achievement.

wren - Doesn't it get damn hot in that trailer of yours when you light so many candles for Glen? This must be especially true now that the weather is turning hot. Just be careful that you don't burn it down.

Like many people here I don't hate Glen but I also don't try to make him into something that he wasn't. What he wasn't was a person who liked to recruit. This included establishing relationships with high school coaches. He also didn't like to do a lot of other things that you also need to do to build a program. As a result he eventually paid the price and was fired. You have been told this by so many people but you won't accept this because you are wearing rose colored glasses. If you weren't you might have realized by now that Glen is not the man you think he is.

I know that you keep on suggesting that Coach Kill has a ways to go to go before he reaches Glen’s level. I also know you think it is all about Big Ten wins but it really about building a program on solid ground across all aspects of your program. This requires hard work which is something that Glen wasn't always willing to do. For example, when Kill realized how serious a mess the program academics were in, he acted quickly and decisively and made sure that the problem was fixed. He didn't whine about it but he just went about fixing it. He shows same leadership and abilities when he encounters any problem. So you can talk about Big Ten wins until the cows come home but turning a program starts with doing a whole lot of things a lot better than Glen did. This requires first hard work. Coach Kill said something to the effect "I'm not smarter than other people but I can work harder than them." Unfortunately, Glen never had the drive or the ability to do what coach Kill is doing now. You therefore might want to take off those rose colored glasses you have on when you look at Glen. He wasn't a bad person but he was far from the man you think he was. But it makes no difference now because Glen is gone. Give it a rest wren.

Very well said Killer, very well.

I am NOT talking about former fired and bought out coaches. YOU talk about them Bayfield. I am talking about the PRESENT situation. The present Coach. I say the clock is ticking. And, what the coach has done in terms of Conference wins is NOT enough if it is less than those coaches who have already been fired for not winning enough Conference Games... Remember: it is you people who are trying to justify the past...not I... I am stuck right here in the present and I want MORE Conference wins, bowl invitations and once in a while a bowl win. Is that out of line for an old, very long-time Golden Gopher Football Fan who has been watching all the events since the days of the Paul Giel era... If I liked a coach at one point in time, I will like a coach regardless of what the crowd has to say. The only exceptions to that for me have been the lou hoax abandonment of the Gophers and the Brewster hire. Otherwise, from Murray through Stoll, Salem, Gutty, Wacker, Mason and now Kill: I have liked and have fully supported them all and will remain loyal. Only a part of the good any coach does will come to fruition without enough wins to keep that coach employed and doing good things.

I am NOT taling about former or bought out coaches. You do a good job of that especially comparing past and current coaches records to Mason's. Most of us here understand that Mason's record was short of mediocre and I find that unacceptable and certainly not a standard for Coach Kill or other future coaches. Throw in his dismall track record on academics and player retention.

The purpose of this thread is to recognize the great academic progress under Coach Kill. My comments are in regard to past coaches, including Mason, who gave lip service to the academic part of being a student/athlete. You chose to blame the past Admin. rather than put the target on Mason where it belonged. And Mason's record does speak loud and clear as well as the high drop out rate of his recruits. Coach Kill has put an end to that and brought much needed stability and depth to the roster

So: you say the admin doesn't run the show and supervise coaches?

Give me a break Bayfield. You think that the AD is not responsible for everything that happens in the athletic department. And, you think that the prexy of the college is not in charge of the AD? Oh, I want to see Coach Kill do incredibly well all right. BUT, he has got to win more games than other coaches won before I will give him the credit for being a better coach than they were. You can just go out and anoint him if you want but I have got to see the results.

Some who praise Coach Kill right now WILL be calling for his head within a year or two if he doesn't produce a winning season this year...the next year...the year after that. No Bayfield, the purpose of this thread is for you to bash a coach you say you used to support and then you learned to not like or support.

A note to our new norwood: Is Coach Kill totally on his own in running the football program or do you supervise him? If something goes wrong within the Football Program will you, the AD step in and supervise your coach in coming up with an adequate plan to rectify the problem in the program? Who is the boss Norwood...you or Coach Kill? Bayfield implies that coaches run their own show. I maintain that if there is a problem Coach Kill isn't responding to that you will step in and take charge Norwood. Where does the buck in the Football Program stop Norwood...with your...or...Coach Kill? Are you BOTH to blame if a problem exists and Neither one of you responds? Do you report to Prexy K?

At any rate Bayfield: you will NEVER convince me that less is more. When I see Coach Kill racking up MORE Conference wins than other coaches did I will be a very happy Gopher Fan. But, until that happens...Coach Kill has got to SHOW me by winning and being competitive within the Conference. It is a mighty tough task.

That is my final take on this subject. I can't spend any more time talking to you about it because I'll most likely be called all kinds of names by the gang out there. So, have the last word. Make it good. We will learn a LOT during this 2013 B1G Season, don't you think Bayfield...I'm hoping for another trip to a bowl game. That would be great for the players, the coaches, the admin and we fans. Catch you later. Here is hoping for a lot of wins!

Life is GREAT. Have a good summer!

It appears that you have done the impossible Bayfield! You have managed to get wren to stop talking about Glen Mason without banning him. Impressive stuff! In all seriousness I thank you even though I expect that was not your intention. As wren would say "Life is GREAT. Have a good summer!" But what do we talk about now?

Heck Killer, Wren and I go way back and, actually, I rather enjoy bantering back and forth with him. We agree to disagree the majority of the time, but that is OK. But I know he is a diehard Gopher fan like many others here and his heart is in the right place. So life is great and I plan on having a great Summer up here in Bayfield!! You too!

Thanks for the comments Bayfield and the good wishes. In your case, instead of wishing you a great summer I should probably be wishing for you that summer arrives there. I have spent at lot of time sailing up there so that comment is just me being jealous. As a matter of fact, after I finished mowing lawn a little while ago I remembered how good it felt to go swimming up there on a hot day. No, that is not right. It was the getting out of the lake that felt so good. Jealous again.

Anyway, the bay at Stockton Island sometimes could be tolerable on a hot calm day. Now I just click on the pictures below when I need to cool off.

Yep, Julian Bay on Stockton Island is a gem!! The water there is beyond cold.

Put the boat in last Monday for the first time and had to abort due to and engine problem. Maybe over the 4th. Its hard to beat the Apostle Islands!

Stop in when you get back up here.
