Last March, Minnesota basketball wrapped up a dreadful Big Ten regular season with the greatest of insults. The Gophers, fielding a depleted roster ripped apart by player suspensions, went to Piscataway, New jersey, and lost to Rutgers, perhaps the worst team in Big Ten history. The Scarlet Knights were 0-17 in conference play before the game. They were 1-17 afterward.
Folks had long given up on the Golden Gophers by that point. They finished the regular season 2-16, playing in front of cascading rows of empty seats at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. The program devolved from bad to embarrassing.
Ten months later, those seats are filling up again. Minnesota is 12-1 overall after non-conference play. Under coach Richard Pitino, who might have been fired last offseason if not for an unfeasible contract buyout, the Gophers are one of the top turnaround stories in college basketball.
