per David Mayo:

Minnesota has been on fairly stable footing for two decades, dating back to the Glen Mason era. Getting fans interested has been a different story. Minnesota built the cozy TCF Bank Stadium for several reasons, including that the old Metrodome looked half-empty against anyone but Michigan because it was. TCF Bank Stadium seats just less than 51,000. A 9-4 team this year, 6-1 at home, averaged just less than 44,000 for home games.

What Minnesota's decades of adjustments and re-adjustments didn't previously include, but does now, is hiring the hottest 30-something on the coaching market. Fans there typically find themselves Ski-U-Mahing for an established new coach with receding hairline or midsection paunch who built his reputation at another member of what we now call the Power Five conferences.

Enter Fleck, the 36-year-old flatbelly who played and coached in the MAC, and brought such youthful vigor to Western Michigan that it easily could have been interpreted as artless schtick if not for all the winning.

If Oregon thought Fleck was all sizzle, so be it.

Minnesota needs sizzle.
