Mitch Leidner - How he stacks up (Player Efficiency)

Hey if you switch over to qualified instead of all players he jumps to #116......out of 124.

Completion percentage below 50% with twice as many picks as TD's (4/2), not hard to figure out why he would rank so low on this list.

Good Point! This is atcually worse than I thought.

The joy some of you guys take in Mitch's problems is kind of sad.

I don't take any joy in the struggles but it is pretty amazing when you see his numbers up against the rest of the country. If Mitch starts again this weekend even with all the struggles and injuries he has had to this point that will say a lot to me about the faith the staff has in Streveler and the other backups. Everything is in place to sit Mitch for a week, just attribute it to the injuries and give Streveler a shot to see what you have. Mitch could serve as the backup if Streveler were to fall flat right off the bat.

Responsibility

Yes, Mitch is responsible for the numbers but his efficiency rating was 30 points higher last year.
As coaches, the idea is to develop and improve your players?

For all the Gray quarterback bashers...his efficiency rating in 2012 at quarterback was 146.
Remarkably, one spot ahead of Jordan Lynch. (obviously Lynch had a bit larger group of numbers in his stats) but still. The good ol' days.

100% perfect sense. And if it doesn't happen, it does speak volumes.

And they may start Leidner Saturday with a bum toe and bad knee...go figure.

And when that happens it should tell all of us loud and clear what they think of Streveler, Perra, and any other QB on the roster right now in terms of their readiness to play in games. Doesn't mean those guys can't still be decent players but if they send a hobbled Mitch out there instead of a healthy backup against a weak opponent then it means he is the only option they believe they have right now at the QB position.

1. You don't know that Mitch is hobbled. May be in pain, but can move.
2. There are a lot of reasons why you want to start Mitch that have absolutely nothing to do with Perra or streveler. A bunch. You can't think of any? They stink is all you got?

So no, it doesn't tell us loud and clear anything.

1. He has a strained MCL and now Turf Toe. If he is not in pain then he is superhuman as turf toe is supposedly extremely painful.
2. Didn't say the backups stink, I said they are not ready to lead the team.

Pain and hobbled are not the same thing.
You don't know that they aren't ready to lead the team. You have listed that as the only possibility, rather than just your opinion that it's the most likely.
Other possibilities:
Mitch is the best player at qb, and they want to give him time to work through his struggles, long term thinking. Pulling the plug when he can play destroys his confidence.
They don't want to create a needless qb controversy.
They are stubborn and have hitched their wagon to Mitch and don't want to admit they are wrong just yet.
It's not all Mitch's fault, combo of bad blocking, bad WR play, defenses doing things to make him uncomfortable.

That Mitch is playing tells you that coaches believe he does now or will over the course of the season, give us the best chance to win this year. It doesn't tell us anything about the backups other than they don't believe they give us as good of a chance for success. "Ready to lead the team" doesn't really even mean anything.

So yeah....what you said there is essentially the exact same thing I said. If they are playing Mitch, even injured and ineffective as he has been to this point, it means they still feel he is the best option at QB as opposed to one of their other options. We can argue over the word choice but the bottom line is that if they keep running Mitch out there it means the backups are not good enough to beat him out. My reason for using the word ready is that they might not be able to beat him out now but that doesn't mean they won't get to that point at some point in their career.

Maybe.
Or maybe, Mitch's ceiling is a 10, and he's practiced at an 8, and he's played at a 4.
Streveler practices at a 7
Perra practices at a 5.

It sounds like you are arguing that CS and Perra must be practicing at a 3 since they can't supplant Mitch. But as I showed, it could be that Mitch is just not playing to his capability in games, and they don't want to pull the plug on him and would rather give him some time to figure it out. Maybe streveler performs better than Mitch vs tcu(hard to be worse), but over the year, Mitch would end up winning 8 and CS wins 6.

Just using examples of how your statement that this is proof of anything is wrong. You may be right and you may not, lots of variables and possibilities.

Honestly speaking here. How much time do we give him? Seasons are ONLY 11 games long. Are the coaches supposed to throw a season down the toilet in order for him to attempt to figure it out? There are a lot of people on this board saying "lets's give him some more time." I'm trying to figure out how much time is adequate. Per the numbers and performances we can't keep throwing this kid out there if he doesn't improve in the passing game. At some point they need to pull the plug or they will end up losing their jobs based on his performance.

So, let me get everyone's thoughts on this. If Mitch keeps performing at this level, how many more games do we allow him the start before we pull the plug?

Why? I learned on this board just today that you can tell if a QB will succeed in his very first game.

Truthfully, I'm in favor of starting CS5 Saturday. If the coaches feel our ceiling is higher with ML7 then I don't have an issue with him playing 2 more games, min, before revisiting (SJSU, MI). If he plays in those games like he did at TCU - then I might start calling for a change (at which point I would want to see CS5 get the nod). That would be at the bye week. If ML7 shows some improvement over those games then I'd likely let it roll with him for the rest of the year. I'm not real excited about my answer, but I think that is where I am at.

It's a fair question, I don't have an answer. Sounds like Mitch is not moving well so you might get your wish now.
