Say what you want about the past. Fact is, Mitch Leidner has come into his own as a high-level D1 quarterback. In the last four games against big time competition (Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa):

88 for 144 for 1158 yards, 5 TDs and 3 Ints.

Pare it down to the last three games and it's:

62 for 104 for 857 yards, 4 TDs and 1 Int.

On the last drive tonight ol' Mitch took the Gophers 75 yards in 6 plays in just 45 seconds. The kid has got some serious game.

He is good when he steps into his throws and delivers. I am not ready to anoint him yet but I thought he played a pretty good game although he still clearly has first play/series/half jitters.

???

He was 10-14 in the first half.

Mitch was money. I hope he can get us Ws in the next two. If so, all the detractors will evaporate. As they should.

I'm usually pretty hard on him but I'm hoping he has turned the corner. Seems they are letting him do more now and not limiting him and he has gained confidence since. Coincidence that it was when Coach Kill retired? Maybe... maybe not, but I tend to think that Coach Kill did not trust Leidner enough to open up the offense like this.

Good for him! Next year will be the year to watch if we get healthy!

Kill will not like this stat line. When Mitch was struggling earlier in the year Kill said the job of the QB was to win games. We were 3-1 at that time and Kill said that is all that matters. That being said, I differ with Kill, and I think Leidner has looked much better.

Just imagine if we had a Division I QB, the stats would be something like 198 for 204 for 8,652 yards and 86 TDs.

You aren't ready to anoint him to what position? Please be more specific. I would say he's earned #1 and #2 in spades.

  1. A D1 Starter
  2. A B1G-caliber QB
  3. The Savior of our program
  4. A Heisman Trophy Caliber QB
  5. The Best QB Ever

All year, Mitch hasn't had much help from his receivers, but it's the easiest to blame the QB. He's the best we have, hopefully people are finally starting to see that. Looking forward to watching him continue to progress

And weren't two of those INTs against NE late when he was forcing it?

He's good when he doesn't have a MLB spearing his throat as he throws. Big difference when our O-Line has
gelled a lil and has given him protection.

The tone of the post made it seem like he was our heisman candidate IMO. Christ I'm not hear to argue semantics.

Fair enough. But the tone of your post makes it seem like you haven't watched the last four games.

Mitch really has turned the corner - he's got a good percentage going and has led clutch drives in final minutes again and again, while showing real leadership.

you're somewhat right, I have not watched the OSU game.
Mitch has been worlds better than, say CSU or Kent St. but, to me, I just can't stomach over throwing a 6'10 TE on third and crucial. It drives me bonkers. but, that said, I want nothing more than mitch to succeed, I am a gopher fan for f0cks sake.

He is also running with the ball more, too. He's more confident and assertive.

You're right, he'd be a better player if he completed 70% of his passes instead of the 60% he has done. But so would Joe Montana and Dan Marino. So would anyone.

Coming into this season I was hopeful he would take the next step. However I was extremely discouraged after about the 4th series against TCU - I was convinced he would never have it. Then for the next 5 games I was still convinced. But it appears that finally, he is turning the corner. He doesn't even look like the same player of six weeks ago.

Agree with most of this. Was he hurt during that bad stretch as the coaching staff eluded too? I don't know. But, I will say this, Mitch is tough as nails and has played pretty darn well the past few weeks! I'm happy for him as we need him to do well.

Pretty sure it's no coincidence that Leidner turned the corner when they were forced to pull the redshirt off of Tyler Moore.

per Dienhart:

Have you noticed how hot Minnesota QB Mitch Leidner is?
He has thrown for 1,158 yards with five TD passes in his last four games vs. Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio State and Iowa. Alas, the Gophers have lost all four games. Still, it’s nice to see the Minnesota passing game come to life. Too bad the rushing game has been spotty, as the line has dealt with injury issues. -
