Rutgers lost at Elon 66-54. Rutgers was out rebounded 55-37 according to the box score. The Scarlet Knights were 4-19 from behind the arc while Elon was 9-26. Anyway, I'm going back to watching the Ohio State/South Carolina game.

A few Amy Williams quotes from the Huskers 55-35 home loss to #25 Missouri:

Nebraska missed the first 16 two-point field goals it attempted in what was a historically bad game on offense for for the Huskers in a 55-35 loss to No. 25 Missouri in the second round of the Preseason WNIT at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The Huskers’ point total is tied for the second-lowest in program history, matching the total from a game against Texas Tech in 2003. The worst total in program history is 31 points in the 1970s.

Nebraska had 10 turnovers, which wasn’t bad. But the Huskers made just 10 of 63 field-goal attempts and were just 9-for-17 on free throws.

“We’re just going to have to gain some confidence somewhere from somebody to be able to make shots,” first-year Nebraska coach Amy Williams said. “Obviously, the more that we can hit perimeter shots the more it kind of stretches some things out and allows a little more room free up for us to be able to do some things inside.”

“I think the biggest thing is just being able to have five players on the same page on every possession, and when somebody throws something different at you like a 2-2-1 press, and once you break the press we still need to then have five people getting into something and getting organized and being on the same page,” she said. “Tonight it felt like we were so happy to get the ball across half court after we broke the pressure, then it was kind of just go make plays one-on-one and do your own thing, and that’s definitely not what we want to do.”

This pretty much sums up the battle between upcoming Gopher opponents. South Carolina 92, Ohio State 80. (I'll add that offensively the Buckeyes still are most dangerous when the ball is in Kelsey Mitchell's hands; defense is still an issue).

After waiting about 20 months to play a game for the Gamecocks, that belated tip came not a moment too soon for Kaela Davis and Allisha Gray. Transfers eligible for the first time with their new team, they had a lot of lost shots to make up for.

Behind 37 points from Davis and 24 points from Gray, fourth-ranked South Carolina outlasted No. 7 Ohio State 92-80 for a road win as impressive as any they earned a season ago. By way of Georgia Tech and North Carolina, respectively, Davis and Gray combined to outscore everyone else on their team. The pair scored 61 points and took 39 shots. Their teammates scored 31 points and took 25 shots.

Without them, South Carolina would have lost Monday night.

With them, well, it's fun to imagine what is possible in the months ahead.

"You've got to let the players play," South Carolina coach Dawn Staley said. "For us, we've never been this fortunate in allowing them to make plays. You don't have to control everything. Once you try and do that, you get in the way of everybody."

South Carolina looked really good even with A'ja Wilson not having a great game. I'm a bit nervous for that game, to say the least. SC could be championship-worthy.

The Badgers are now 0-3 after falling to Dayton in Madison 83-64. The Flyers 58 second half points crushed any Red resistance. For the game, Dayton shot 13-26 from behind the arc.

Some bad teams in the B1G this year

Indeed, and check out what it's doing to RPI so far at realtimerpi. Obviously, it's early and things will change but the B1G is currently 16th in RPI, behind such powerhouses as the Sun Belt Conference and the Ivy League.

Adding to the negative, Illinois lost 64-54 at home (one of those school day games) to Melissa McFerrin's Memphis Tigers. The Illini's Cierra Rice, who missed most of last season with an ACL, left today's game hobbled by a knee injury. The Illini bright spot was Czech freshman Petra Holesinka with 18 points. Alex Wittinger scored 12 and grabbed 12 rebounds

Rutgers, Illinois, Wisconsin, Nebraska are all terrible. Penn State and Purdue only slightly better, although PSU has some good players and I might be underestimating them.

In the spirit of noting how much things are going to change, RPI-wise (and how meaningless RPI is this early in the season), I'll also point out that realtime currently has Minnesota at number two!

After watching UConn struggle against Florida State, that seems about right to me...

On the plus side, Indiana visited Chattanooga and defeated the Mocs 79-76. The Hoosiers made the big shots late. Tyra Buss scored 23.

Rutgers is still searching for that first victory after losing at Wake Forest 55-43. Yes there were ugly shooting percentages. Rutgers was 5-12 from the line while Wake was 13-24.

-- Aided by a 16-0 run between the second and third quarters, Wake Forest women's basketball pulled away from Rutgers on Thursday night at LJVM Coliseum in earning a 55-43 victory.

Leading 26-20 with 3:11 to go in the first half, Wake Forest finished the second quarter with a 6-0 run and continued out of the break with a 10-0 run over the course of the first 4:29 of the third quarter to take a commanding lead at 42-20 and never looked back from there on the way to the win.

The Demon Deacons improved to 2-1 on the young season while Rutgers was left still in search of its first victory of 2016-17.

The Scarlet Knights opened with the first four points of the game, but Wake Forest quickly went on a 9-2 run midway through the quarter to take the lead and did not surrender it the rest of the way. With two seconds to go in the quarter, Rutgers cut the Demon Deacon lead to just one at 13-12, but that one-point margin was the closest the Scarlet Knights would come the rest of the night as Wake Forest opened the second quarter on another 9-2 run.

In all, Wake Forest outscored Rutgers 19-8 in the second frame to build a 32-20 lead at halftime. The Demon Deacons exploited the quarter Rutgers has struggled in most thus far this year as Scarlet Knights had been outscored 33-17 in the first two games of the season in the second quarter. After Thursday's game, Rutgers has now been outscored 52-25 in the second quarter.

The B1G is rapidly turning itself into a three- or four-bid conference.

In overtime, Michigan State defeated Western Michigan in Kalamazoo 68-64. Nia Hollie scored 7 points in 18 minutes.

Michigan fell behind 6-0 and then went on a 52-0 run as the Wolverines defeated Howard 109-41

-- The University of Michigan women's basketball team used a 52-0 run over 14:05 in the first and second quarters to put away Howard en route to a 109-41 win over the Bison on Friday evening (Nov. 18) inside Crisler Center.

Michigan fell behind 6-0 in the first minutes of the game before ripping off 52 straight points. Junior Katelynn Flaherty spearheaded the run, scoring 17 points with six assists. Sophomore Hallie Thome had 12 points, freshman Kysre Gondrezick went for nine, and junior Maria Backman chipped in five. Junior Jillian Dunston, senior Danielle Williams and senior Siera Thompson each scored three points to account for all 52 during the run.

Western Kentucky takes down the #23 Hoosiers in Bowling Green 85-74.

Junior Tashia Brown tallied 15 of her game-high 28 points in the fourth quarter and redshirt senior Kendall Noble approached a triple-double as WKU took down No. 23 Indiana, 85-74, inside E.A. Diddle Arena on Saturday afternoon in the 34th Annual BB&T Classic matchup.

The Lady Toppers have now defeated a ranked opponent in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 1996-97 and 1997-98 campaigns after dropping No. 16 Louisville inside Diddle last season.

Brown's 28 points led all scorers on Saturday afternoon for WKU (2-1), and she was joined in double figures by Noble (16), Ivy Brown (11) and Micah Jones (11). Noble, the only active Division I player with a triple-double in her career, stuffed the stat sheet by adding nine rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and a steal as well.

Northwestern, without Nia Coffey, lost, 89-66 at #20 DePaul. Coffey missed the last two games because of an "upper body injury".

No. 20 DePaul women’s basketball (3-0) passed their first big test of the season with flying colors as they took out the Northwestern Wildcats (3-1) 89-66.

Senior guard Jessica January led the game with 25 points to give the Blue Demons the victory in the Chicago rivalry game, which Northwestern won last season in double overtime.

“We had won two of the last three coming into tonight,” Northwestern head coach Joe McKeown said. “I’m disappointed but also it’s great for the city of Chicago and great for Chicago women’s basketball to play these games. It’s not a rivalry unless you beat each other.”

Northwestern was missing first-team All American Nia Coffey, which had an impact on the game. However, DePaul head coach Doug Bruno said Northwestern was still very formidable.

“The other night against Missouri State they had their most productive offensive night of the year,” he said. “You don’t just say this is going to be okay because Nia Coffey is out. This is a game we were really concerned about.”

Some interesting results today involving BIG teams. Penn State trounces #13 Tennessee 70-56 in Happy Valley. South Dakota State goes into Iowa and defeats the Hawkeyes 66-64. Southern Illinois goes into Lafayette and defeats a struggling Purdue 64-61. Wiscy with a rare win at home over Butler 60-55. Maryland pummels Niagra; Illinois routs South Carolina Upstate.

PSU is a confounding team. And, sorry for the schadenfreude, but I'm not mad about checking the stats and seeing DeShields had a dreadful shooting day.

A bit more carnage in the B1G:

Mercer defeated Illinois in Champaign 51-33. Illini scoring by quarter: 5, 11, 10, 7. Illinois shot 22.8% (3-31 from behind the arc). The Illini committed 21 turnovers and 20 fouls. Earlier in the season Mercer lost 72-64 to the Gophers next opponent, Georgia.

Home standing Milwaukee defeated Wisconsin 80-63. The Badgers committed 23 fouls and 17 turnovers.

And to round out the evening; #24 Michigan State lost to Oregon in Eugene 88-55.

http://www.goducks.com/news/2016/11/23/womens-basketball-ducks-dominate-no-24-michigan-state.aspx

— In the toughest test yet this season for Oregon women's basketball, the Ducks passed with flying colors Tuesday, outclassing No. 24 Michigan State to the tune of an 88-55 victory before 2,056 in Matthew Knight Arena.

How It Happened: The Ducks (4-0) never trailed after the opening minute, and broke the game open with a 16-0 run that began late in the first quarter and extended into the second. Oregon played tenacious defense, hounding the Spartans (4-1) into .317 shooting with 24 turnovers. The UO women shot .531 themselves, and finished with 23 assists on their 34 field goals.

Ruthy Hebard got the 16-0 run started with a three-point play for a 13-8 lead late in the first quarter. She capped the run early in the second with another basket for a 26-8 lead, and the Ducks led by double digits the rest of the way. The lead reached 41-18 just after halftime as Hebard scored after tic-tac-toe passing by Maite Cazorla and Jacinta Vandenberg. Two Jayde Woods free throws capped a 14-2 run later in the third quarter that made it 60-24.

Oregon eventually led by as much as 44, at 72-28 on a three-pointer by Cazorla early in the fourth quarter. The Spartans had a 29-23 advantage in the final period to close the gap a bit.

In the Paradise Jam, Michigan defeated #25 Gonzaga 78-66. Flaherty had 22 points for the Wolverines and Thompson chipped in 21 points (she was 5-6 from three).

In Cancun, Purdue took their frustrations out on Wichita State, 86-49. Shocker and former Gopher, Rangie Bessard, scored 12 points in 21 minutes.

Also in Cancun, #9 UCLA defeated Iowa 78-65. Chase Coley had 0 points in 10 minutes.

Why's she play only ten minutes? Is she not even a starter?

It's been an interesting switch. But, Bluder prefers a four guard lineup.

This is from a couple of weeks ago:

http://www.hawkcentral.com/story/sp...se-coley-kathleen-doyle-lisa-bluder/93769938/

Nobody had really emerged as that sixth woman yet entering Sunday. That changed, courtesy of Coley and Doyle.

Coley started all but two games last year and many pegged her as a shoo-in to start. Instead, head coach Lisa Bluder went with a one center, four guard look, and Gustafson is that center.

Coley seemed to finally get comfortable in her new role against Hampton. She racked up seven points and seven rebounds in her first eight minutes, and Bluder kept her on the floor with the first unit to close the first half. She finished with seven points and 10 boards — three of which were offensive.

“One thing coming in with that second group, I feel like my job out there is to make sure I keep the energy rolling,” Coley said. "From the first group in to the second group in. And I feel when one person gets energy, it just sparks it for the rest of the team, and that’s really my goal out on the court.”

In a one-minute, nine-second stretch in the third, Coley registered a block, four rebounds and three points. She’s the same height as Gustafson (6-foot-3), but she doesn’t boast the strength inside. Often that sixth-woman role is much more about jolting your teammates than anything else.

“Chase is one of our goofier players on the team, and I mean that in a loving way,” Bluder said. “Seriously, she just always really brings energy to our team. She’s the fun one.”

For comparison score fans, Georgetown (4-2) defeated Penn State (4-2) in Daytona Beach 68-54. Penn State led 29-27 at the half.

Rutgers is now 0-5 after losing at Princeton (1-5) 64-34. Rutgers scoring by quarters; 5, 12, 5, 12.

Nia Coffey returned to action leading Northwestern (4-1) to a 73-68 win over #16 Florida (4-1) in Evanston. In 36 minutes, Coffey posted 26 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals.

Rutgers got into the win column defeating the Bryant Bulldogs in Piscataway 50-42. Rutgers knocked down a three and a layup in the closing seconds clinching the win.

Indiana, once leading by 17 and still leading by 53-39 entering the fourth, lost at Auburn 71-67. The Hoosiers suffered a four plus minute scoring drought fueled by turnovers in a fitful final quarter.

Ohio State after defeating #11 Syracuse 77-72 on Saturday (Kelsey Mitchell's late free throws broke a 72 all tie), the #8 Buckeyes (5-2) were stopped by #5 Baylor (7-1) 85-68 today.

Frustration grows for B1G's first year coaches:

Badgers lose at home, 42-35, to Idaho State.

Jonathan Tsipis’ postgame message to Idaho State coach Seton Sobolewski was simple and direct.

“When I talked to Seton after the game I said I thought we set basketball back offensively on both ends,” Tsipis said.

Sobolewski couldn’t argue the point, but he had the consolation of coming away with a 42-35 victory over Tsipis’ University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team Tuesday night at the Kohl Center.

The loss was a disturbing one for Tsipis, especially because it came on the heels of a victory Sunday at Illinois State.

Even more disturbing was the fact the Badgers (3-7) were generally outhustled and out-toughed by the Bengals (3-5).

“When we talked (Monday) with the team about Idaho State we talked about a toughness that they have, that even though they don’t have a winning record they’re really good on the glass,” Tsipis said. “They weren’t shooting it great but they just kept coming after you.

Nebraska loses at home, 84-70, to Drake.

Trust in the process.

After an 84-70 loss to Drake, the frustration level for the Nebraska women’s basketball team might have hit a season high.

The Bulldogs, who were coming off a 71-48 loss to Wisconsin-Green Bay on Saturday, led for 36 minutes and dominated the Huskers in almost every statistical category Tuesday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena. However, NU players and coaches say they’re focused on the big picture.

“To say that we need to do one or two things to flip the switch, that’s not going to happen,” sophomore Jessica Shepard said. “Right now, we need to buy into the process and just be there for each other. This isn’t the end of the world. We’re going to build from here.”

NU (3-6) has lost five in a row in coach Amy Williams’ first year, but no one is ready to declare the season a lost cause.

“We are still a team that’s trying to work towards being able to put together complete games,” Williams said, “and be the team we are capable of.”
