East Lansing — There’s little doubt Minnesota, on the verge of winning nine games, has been one of the surprises of the Big Ten.

But what’s more impressive is the Gophers have done that without their coach for a good portion of the season.

Jerry Kill, in his (third) year, has been limited since the Michigan game in early October when the latest in a string of epileptic seizures forced him to step away from full-time duties.

Minnesota lost that day, but won four straight before falling last week against Wisconsin. Leading the way has been defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys as Kill has slowly worked his way back.

It’s something Michigan State, this week’s opponent, has dealt with, albeit on a shorter basis.

In 2010, when coach Mark Dantonio suffered a heart attack following the Notre Dame game, offensive coordinator Don Treadwell took over the next four weeks as Dantonio went from out, to the coaches box, to the sidelines.

Dantonio said Tuesday the same type of staff continuity he had then is what is making things go so smoothly for the Gophers.

“I think it talks about their staff, that they have an experienced staff,” Dantonio said. “Their staff has been with him for a very long time. A lot of those guys, some guys for 20 years. So you’ve got people that understand what he wants and basically been indoctrinated into his way of thinking. So the transition is very smooth.”..

It’s much like the staff Dantonio has with him at Michigan State.

Defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi, linebackers coach Mike Tressel, defensive backs coach Harlon Barnett, offensive line coach Mark Staten and offensive coordinator Dave Warner have been with him since 2007.

“They’ve been able to adapt and continue on,” Dantonio said of the Gophers. “And I think that’s the thing that happened when I had a setback in 2010 there, or I had a step back. I think the same thing happened with Coach Treadwell and Coach Narduzzi and our staff.

Later in that article Dantonio responded to a question about senior QB Andrew Maxwell playing. Reading between the lines and making a huge stretch, he basically said Maxwell might play after the Spartans have a big lead late in the game...
