According to HawkeyReport, Evan McMillan, 6-5, 190 pound quarterback, of St. Paul Academy has cast his lot with the Hawkeyes as a walk-on.

Any recruiting gurus have thoughts on his abilities? Looking at his schools of interest, he must be academically sound. Did not list Minnesota as a school of interest, however. Wisconsin was the other Big 10 school of interest.

Go Gophers!!

Interesting, I've got a buddy who works at SPA, he said the kid is pretty talented, though played at against a very low level of competition with very little supporting talent around him. Smart kid, obviously coming from a private school like SPA. Overall, he said he's got an arm and can run quite a bit, but was beaten badly in alot of games. Supposedly Ivy league schools were scouting him.
I dunno, I'd guess he'll give football a shot and then focus on academics if he can't see the field.

When it comes to academics, the Big 10 Conference has much to be proud of. All of the Big 10 schools have much to offer. It's up to the students to take advantage of the opportunities that are afforded during their college days. Just as in sports, some avail themselves and pursue the opportunities presented and some don't. The more they put forth in their studies, the more they'll receive.

That's my take.

Go Gophers!!

QB is the one position where you see very few walkons contributing at the Big Ten level.

Iowa has had some success with bringing in high school QBs and making them good at other positions. I'm guessing they see him as a potential TE or DE, if he gets a shot. One thing I'll say is that there probably isn't a program in the Big Ten that has utilized walkons better than Iowa has in the past ten years. The Pro Bowl TE from the AFC was a walkon LB at Iowa (Dallas Clark). They probably have 4-5 walkons since 2000 who have played in the NFL.

He plays safety now from what I hear, might have some future there. A position change is probably in order, since Iowa has a big time hometown QB prospect committed.

I think he will definitely stay at QB.

This reminds me of a kid who was a QB at St. Thomas named Dave Raih (something like that), he was a real smart kid and walked on to play QB for Iowa. This was about 5-7 years ago. He was a real similar player to Evan McMillan, same size about the same ability.

Great story about David Raih, here.

As an alum of SPA myself, I can tell you for a fact that the curriculum there is very rigorous. As such, he's more than likely a good student. Whether that means he can play football at Iowa, I'm not sure. Haven't seen him play, although from what I understand, the kid's a pretty good hockey player as well. As for football, I can verify that SPA doesn't exactly play a killer schedule.

This story of this kid immedietly reminded me of Dave. I grew up playing with and against him in a lot of sports. I went to Cretin and he went to St. Thomas, and I actually remember him more in basketball (we didn't really play St. Thomas in football). He is a great guy and this is an awesome story.

To bad we didn't get him he is a great player!
