The problem with the polls is inertia. No one ever looks back at the reason why a team jumped into the polls in the first place. A great example is East Carolina (don't get me wrong, I like their story). But, they lost to SC - which at the time was not considered too bad because people thought SC was a legit top team so no shame in a loss. Then, they beat VTech, which jumped them up huge because VTech beat OSU which had them jump into the top 25. With hindsight, that loss vs. SC was against an unranked opponent and the win vs. VTech was against an unranked opponent. So, basically 4-1 with no signature win a bad loss to an unranked opponent yet they are top 25. Minnesota has not beat a ranked opponent, but our loss was against a current top 10 team. Our resume is technically better based on what has actually happened over the last 6 weeks. However, changing the rankings for what actually happens on the field vs. some BS pre-season poll bias is beyond the AP (and coaches apparently).
