As long as the defense maintains a top-five unit in the conference and the offense continues to improve, the Gophers will be a contender to win the Big Ten West unlike some major publications who are projecting them to finish anywhere from second to fourth behind Wisconsin, Iowa and even Nebraska.

I think for the writers, it comes down to how much importance you put on offense as opposed to defense.

if you think offense is more important, you're probably going to be more bullish on the Gophers.

if you place more importance on defense, you will probably have more questions about the Gophers.
Now, assuming the season is played, Rossi and the defense will have a chance to answer those questions, so the perspective on the Gophers could change by mid-season. But that depends on the games actually being played - and I am still skeptical that this season is going to happen.

At least we're back to where we can score points with Tanner at the helm with a strong supporting cast.

Frankly, I'm a little concerned about special teams over the season...whatever that might look like.

The D will have growing pains but should mature steadily.

Of course no way to know how Coach will use his timeouts...

Really don't care if we get "respect" or not from a bunch of media who haven't taken Minnesota seriously for years. I love the way the season ended last year and looking forward to it continuing. Now we just have to have a season.

There is no way any top 30 program in college football returns their quarterback and almost their whole offense after a top 10 finish and is not ranked in the top 10 again nationally regardless of what happens on the defensive side of the ball.

However, that is the issue - we are not considered a top 30 program in the country nationally. Top 60 yes, but not a consistent top 25 contender. As such we will be treated as most 30 - 60 programs are. A program that can have a good team every now and again but not on a yearly basis.

If Covid/Protests/AlienDemonSperm hadn't come along and thrown the world into a maelstrom, i think the Gophers might be getting a little more respect from their most recent season. Unfortunately with the whirlwind of chaos going on, our nation's short term memories have been besieged and so there isn't enough recent sustained winning to get us the attention we would have had with more media focus and reports out of spring practice. The reality is that some degree of momentum has been compromised and expectations might tend to be a little more biased than usual towards programs with a history of success than they would in any other "normal" year.
