This phenomenon crosses team boundaries (Gophers/Vikings/etc.) but the self-loathing gets to me sometimes. The levels our fan base can go to manufacture negatives can be quite creative.
Exhibit A:
“Why you getting so excited over that <insert name of any defeated opponent> win? Until they beat Wisconsin it doesn’t mean anything.”
Followed by Wisconsin victory, and then...
“Geez, you are acting like it is a national championship and it is just one win over a rival, an uncharacteristically bad Wisconsin team.”
I’m seeing/hearing plenty of comments along the lines of the second quote today.
