One of those teams, according to Treash, are the Minnesota Golden Gophers. And the biggest reason for their inclusion is the return of the quarterback-wide receiver duo of Tanner Morgan and Rashod Bateman.

“Morgan had one of the most significant year-to-year improvements we saw at the position from 2018 to 2019 — he raised his PFF passing grade rank from 104th to eighth,” Treash wrote. “One of the best aspects of his game last year was his play under pressure, as he ranked second to only Joe Burrow in pressured passing grade and earned top-10 marks in both negatively graded and positively graded play rate.”

Last season, in guiding Minnesota to an 11-win season and its first AP Top 10 ranking since 1962, Morgan passed for 3,253 yards with 30 touchdowns and seven interceptions. And while big-bodied receiver Tyler Johnson is gone to the NFL, Bateman figures to be among the nation’s top pass-catchers in 2020.

“As for Bateman, he’s a top-three wide receiver in college football," Treash added. “His route-running ability is top-notch; like former teammate Tyler Johnson, his route running sets him up to get open and to come down with a big play at any moment. He produced a gain of 15-plus yards on nearly 38% of his total targets a season ago, the third-highest rate in college football. He can also create after the catch, as he produced the fourth-most broken tackles among Power 5 returners last year. The stock continues to trend up for the Golden Gophers.”

Go Gophers!!

These threads are a waste of time until we know whether they’re going to play this Fall.

As a long time fan of all Gopher sports (including many dry years of football), I'll take the hype. Its nice to be amongst the hottest programs in the country right now (even with the threat of COVID).

With that said, obviously an actual season would be nice!

I'm torn on the hype train.

I like the team getting hype and attention. But I also don't because it sets up potential disappointment. It's a heck of a lot nicer when you surprise people by being better than expected, than letting prognosticators down.

How they handle this different kind of attention and hype will certainly be telling. If they are as robotic as the coach leads on (all about the process and rowing and all that cliched speak), then the outside noise won't affect them. But you see a lot of teams struggle when all they've known is the underdog role, adapt to being the proverbial hunted.
