Minneapolis considering title game bid - ESPN

I'm so there if it were to happen. But, I have no idea what is taken into consideration for the bid. I suppose money is always at the top of the list. Something tells me that the Twin Cities would come in dead last, even with a brand spankin' new stadium for the local professional team.

The story does not indicate what the requirements are for a stadium/city to host the game. I would be interested to find out what type of criteria has been set as far as: capacity of stadium; # of available hotel rooms; other facilities needed for related events; accomodations for the media.

Seeing as how the Twin Cities has hosted Final Fours, a Super Bowl, and national political conventions, I would think they would meet most of the requirements - depending on how many seats there will be in the Ziggy Evil Intent Dome.

Then, there's that whole pesky weather issue................

One of these is not like the others in January.
Jacksonville, Miami, New Orleans, San Antonio, San Francisco, Tampa, Atlanta, Minneapolis and Arlington, Texas.

Agree, AO. Minneapolis is #1, the others are all tied for last place.

Per the article:

Cities that will bid on the Jan. 9, 2017, game include Jacksonville, Miami, New Orleans, San Antonio, San Francisco and Tampa.

Other cities considering a bid on either game include Atlanta, Minneapolis and Arlington, Texas, sources said.

Go Gophers!!

With friends like you guys... Minneapolis doesn't need enemies.

Minneapolis would be a great host and the game would do well here.

don't disagree personally that it would be a great location, but you gotta tell that to whichever team's fans are coming from the SEC or PAC 12

I'll say it again...

THE GAME WOULD DO WELL HERE.

Quite true. Wish they'd open up the Big Ten Title Game for bids also. Would really like to see that one here in the new "Palace" in Minneapolis.

sure, but if you're in charge of picking the location? It's no coincidence that we don't play December games at the Bank and couldn't wait to move out of Dome. Football is better outside. The new dome is also going to have a smaller capacity than most of those other venues.

I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with your police work there, AO54.

Talking about December games in any way, in any college stadium is a bit strange considering there are very few non-bowl or playoff college games played in December.

Also, the new dome will have the ability to expand its capacity to host bigger events like the super bowl. If it can host the super bowl, it can host a college championship too.

I like football outdoors too. But, there hasn't been a drum beat to get the sugar bowl out of the Superdome, and that is by modern standards... a not-so-good dome. The new Viking Stadium will be a very nice location for NCAA final fours, super bowls, NCAA FB championships, etc. and Minneapolis has proven over and over to be an excellent host city for big events.

Now, if you turn Block E into a casino, and have ZiggyWorld skyway connected, we would move way up that list.

Minneapolis might get a boost in weather perception if New York manages not to be frozen over during the Super Bowl this year.

So many things wrong there.

Time to dream -- We get all the votes from the Northern states -- the rest of the towns split the Southern states vote -- we win :D

+1

let's get that B1G title game in the Twin Cities.....should be a slightly easier get.

unfortunately the bought and sold democrats in this state and their indian tribe masters (campaign donations) will never let that happen. well at least as long as the dems control all 3 brances in MN. thankfully there are some elections coming up soon.

non-indian (private or state run) casinos (i.e. ones that actually collect some state taxes) unlike the way the current MN casino arrangement is set up) all around the state would be a boon to the state's coffers. not like this silly a$$ electronic pull tab b.s. that gov. dayton and the dems came up with as a worthless and pathetic "work around" so they wouldn't have to anger their indian bosses.

I think an interesting part of the bid would be to des robe someone arriving at MSP without a coat and all the things they could do without ever going outside. Airport, light rail, Mall of America, skyways, Ziggyworld, U of M, Target Center....

I love the chutzpa, but I just don't see it "doing well". Every event--every event--including team plazas, concerts, competitions, galas...everything would have to be indoors. You try to put it outdoors and nearly no visiting fans would go. It just isn't, isn't going to happen.

In 1991, the Super Bowl Gala was held at the Target Center. I was there. Ick. The only reason we got 1991 Super Bowl was Max Winter. The only reason.

We tend to be a bit provincial. It will take an extra couple of hundred million dollars in the pot for this one. Who's gonna ante up? The Wilfs? Minneapolis? Governor Target? The U?

Just don't see it in January. Any year.

I just don't see it either, due to the fact that the fan experience (which equates to $$$$) is pretty much paramount at mega-events such as that, and that experience does include bodily comfort....so does anyone really believe that fans wouldn't rather be at some warm-weather locale in the dead of winter, somewhere where they might be able to go and lounge on a beach while sipping mai-tais while escaping the ravages of winter, rather than voluntarily placing themselves into the heart of such winter? Anyone????

I'd choose the beach and/or warm weather every time and without hesitation, particularly given the enormous expense of attending such a venture as that, and that is why I think the holding of Super Bowls in cold weather sites is just quite frankly insane, and really not conducive to the overall fan experience at all.

I salute the fact they're going for it, though. I mean why not, and what is there to lose? I've no doubt but that the Twin Cities could and would put on a hell of a show, but I think the issue of weather in this case is simply an insurmountable one. Just my .02 cents.

they just need to convince the committee to hold the game in July... :pig:

You also have to blame the holier than thou republicans who see an increase in gambling and start to think the streets of Minneapolis are going to be the second coming of Sodom and Gomorrah. There are plenty of those in the legislature as well.

Heaven forbid, a team from the south has to get out of their comfort zone once in awhile.
