per McFeely:

But if Goetz is not a shoo-in, and the search truly is open, somebody should call the athletic department at the University of Iowa and ask to speak with Gene Taylor. He’s the deputy athletic director at Iowa, under top dog Gary Barta. Taylor should be a top candidate for the Gopher job.

You might be rolling your eyes, if you know who Gene Taylor is. Yes, he was the athletic director at North Dakota State for 13 years. NDSU is the college here in Fargo, where these words are being produced. I covered Taylor and his athletic department for all 13 of those years. You might be saying, “Here we go. The hometown rube is cheerleading for his guy.”

Maybe there is an element of that, although you should know Taylor and I aren’t close friends and we knocked heads more than a few times during his stay in Fargo. It was a working relationship: me doing my job as columnist and talk-show host, Gene doing his as the boss of NDSU athletics.

But I do believe Taylor did a helluva job transitioning NDSU from a Division II school with a good history of football success into a mid-major Division I program that has exceeded expectation in pretty much every area — from winning to national media coverage to fundraising to running a fairly clean ship (there was a stretch when NDSU’s football program had some issues with players running afoul of law and order, but more on that later). Other than women’s basketball, Bison teams have had success across the board since the move to Division I. It was a foundation set by Taylor (and NDSU’s presidents).

Go Gophers!!

I'd have no problem with it at all. He's run a successful athletic department at a smaller DI school, has experience in the Big Ten, and is well-versed and experienced overall. He's as viable a candidate as most anyone, assuming he's interested.

No vagina?

No thank you!

I think Taylor would be great.

Sorry, but who in the hell is Mike McFeely? Sounds like a character on Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.

Actually sounds like he belongs coaching at Penn State.

Maybe.... as long as he doesn't give out Kirk Ferentz like contracts....

If he can do the top job great, but that is a lot different the the no. 2 person job. We don't need a guy who is a great second banana but can't lead and build. We had one of those for a decade.

He was the AD at NDSU (the number 1 person job). He was there when they made the move from D-II to D-I. I hear their football team became pretty good at that level. Their basketball team, too. He led and built about as much as you can there.

He also seems realistic, after spending his time in the upper midwest and maybe is ready for a promotion.

If I have my facts correct Iowa has not won a conference Championship in any sport (Men or Women's) in the past five years. Not sure what this guys responsibility is at Iowa but hope we can fine a person who comes from a stronger program. As bad as we are if you look at the last five years our record against Iowa in football and basketball is about 500. We man handled them in Hockey.

I agree completely. At a minimum, should be in the interview pool.

He would be great for gopher athletics, there is no doubt about that. The guy is a no BS guy with a passion for college athletics and a drive to succeed. He is a great family man with a high level of integrity, and was loved at NDSU. He would raise the bar in MN, no doubt.

Of course anything that ever came through NDSU is certainly not big time enough for MN . . . well there's that.

I'll wait until Sid endorses him.
