He's a great coach with a great program. But the conservative play-calling on the final drive left a lot to be desired. Bubble-screens and off-tackle runs? It was a nice drive, but it took the final two minutes off the clock and they needed two scores. They didn't even get one.

skill??

I don't follow Eden Prairie, but a customer of mine does. He said that all year the defense has been dominant and won games for them and that their offense left much to be desired. I don't think they have the skill players to throw down the field.

yeah -- they ran all year long. They had over 3000 yards of rushing and
less than 500 of passing all year.

A school of 3,000+ students and they can't develop a passing game?
I admire the way Grant and his players conduct themselves. Lots of class.
Disappointed in Henderson screaming into the camera and shaking his fists. Have a liitle class. Don't recall the EP players doing this when they dismantled Cretin two years ago.

Henderson was celebrating winning the state championship, I can tell you that he is one of the least arrogant kids I have ever seen. In the heat of the moment, I don't think that's a big deal at all. I also didn't think it was a big deal when Taylor Grant taunted after getting that that phantom PI call in the endzone, or when that tough safety (#6 i believe) would pump his fists after each big play he made. These kids were playing in the biggest games of their lives and were rightfully pretty amped up. Additionally, they play for two of the classiest programs in the state (as far as on-feild conduct).

To the guy who questioned why they couldn't develop much of a passing game, well it really wasn't how they were built. Even in their best years, they were obviously a run first, and second team, and pass off of the running game. When the running gets shut down (a huge rarity for EP), they will struggle passing, and they would have even in their best years. Additionally, Cretin has some pretty talented kids in the secondary. That #23, was simply a better athlete than any of the EP WR's, and he made passing almost impossible.

Grant's first down celebration with under a minute left was a little foolish.

Mike Grant/Taylor Grant: Grampa Bud is embarrassed

Mike Grant-contantly in the ears of officials complaining. About what, I couldn't tell you. EP got the phantom PI penalty to keep them in the game.

Taylor- The first down celebration while down 11 and under 2 minutes to play was a bit much. I certainly didn't see D1 talent out of him.

Bud would not approve.

Are you kidding me???? Is this a joke? You admire the way Grant and his players conduct themselves? Yeah, I mean, when his son caught a first down pass with like 40 seconds left down 11 and got up jumping up and down and signaling first down, you admired that? When Grant spent the entire game bitching to referees you admired that? Grant mentions that CDH deserved to win, and then in the same breath mentioned how the penalties were 10-2. you've got to be kidding me. Mike Grant is one of the most classless coaches I've ever seen. Ask rosemount how they feel about Grant: http://www.startribune.com/sports/preps/59804047.html?page=2&c=y

As for Seantrel- he just won a state championship and was celebrating. that is classless to you? Why not just say you're upset that your alma mater got completely out coached and outplayed and get over it.

Also, I think its pretty clear Grant got exposed as a coach who wins with superior talent, facilities, and community support ($$$$$) while sorely lacking in-game coaching skills. That 2 minute drill at the end of the game was won of the worst things Ive ever seen. Like 5 swing passes and 3 dives up the middle? And they didnt use their timeout til like 10 seconds left? That was atrocious and made me very happy to see that smug arrogant Grant look completely baffled.

Here we go again...Babblers pi$$ing into the wind and also breaking wind at the same time.

+1 Dr. Don

By the way, did it ever occur to you Mike Grant antagonists that he may have had a reason to be in the officials' ears the entire game? 10-2 is pretty lopsided when both teams are playing the same game. I know what a hockey coach would have doing with if he were on the bottom end of the same penalty differential.

EP could develop a passing game. They certainly have the kids and talent. But they won't. Grant is a stubborn coach who is great at working the program and coaching the running game. They win games year after year with great offensive and defensive line play and coaching. Because of this he hardly ever has to pass the ball on offense or blitz on defense. When you never have to blitz, can still stop the run, and are facing HS opponents - it's easy to see why they are hard to score on. Grant does what he does without deviation. It has been wildly successful, but against a team like Cretin they really didn't stand much of a chance.

You honestly thought it was a poorly officiated game? You have to remember that 1/2 of the EP penalties (it seemed) were illegal motion penalties, that were spot on. Additionally, Cretin declined two penalties that I can think of. I am not saying that it was a perfectly officiated game, but the only bad penalty I saw was against Cretin (the phantom PI call against Taylor Grant in the endzone on their FG drive).

I'm not really a Grant antagonist, how could I question a guy with his track record? Furthermore, all the "advantages" that EP has, i'm sure are pretty similar to those of Minnetonka, Eastview, Wayzata, Eagan, etc.

What do you expect from a private school? This is the kind of stuff you get from them.

Anyone who criticizes EP's playcalling obviously did not see them at any point during this season. There were games they won by 40+ points where they threw the ball fewer than a dozen times. Worked against Wayzata, worked against all the other powers they played this year. Happened to not work against Cretin. You can't go from one game plan to another vastly different one in the course of one game. You can make minor adjustments at half, but abandoning what's worked for the entire year (and even into years past) is dumb.

Whoa there Bob! I asked if anyone considered whether or not Grant had reason to be on the officials. I made no comment either way and really don't care a ton, was just curious in light of what on paper was a lopsided penalty tally.
