Mike Ellis was on with Dubay and Doogie this morning (before the Illinois game). Here is a recap of the interview. This is not verbatim, but close:

Ellis on why this team can't get transition points...It's a good question. I think by design, I have seen us slow the ball down and not be willing to run. I agree that we're better in the full court. We're much better when we run. Depth isn't a real strength of this squad. That's a concern that if you run, run, run you will run your guys into the ground. There is the other side that you have to put yourself in a position to win. Our limitations offensively are much less magnified in transition. When we get out in the full court we are at our best.

Ellis on Gophers guards...Dre isn't a point guard, he's working hard on becoming a PG and he's worked his tail off. He's not a finished product off by any means. He's not playing instinctively. In the open floor when he can run up and down instinctively he's better. You don't get to play free (in the half court set) and he and Austin and Joe Coleman absolutely when they run they are better players.

Ellis on if this team is ready for Illinois (mentally)...
I think its as good as you could hope for. They are positive. It's a new season. We are in the Tournament but you don't want to back in. Make your own momentum. I saw it happen two years ago (at VCU) and it took on a life of its own. I do think it can happen. If they don't look energetic in warmups it will be a bad sign. Regardless of what Tubby says, the players have to own it a bit. The 40 minutes is up to them and how they approach it.

Ellis on Gophers' strength of schedule (Tubby apparently said he'd rather go with a soft schedule on the Monday Coach's Show, and "I don't know what it gets us.")...I agree 100% (that we need a tough non-conference schedule). Without the toughness of schedule we wouldn't have the conversation of the NCAA. Absolutely I agree. We put this team in a much better position when you understand where your weaknesses are. You don't learn anything about yourself against softer teams. You get lazy. You don't want to overdue it the other way but its something we've definitely talked about and we have some ideas as well.

Go Gophers!!

Great insight from Ellis......

Agreed, though if I'm the HC, I can't imagine I'm too happy that my boss is more or less openly criticizing the offense, the way we're using our guards, and the scheduling philosophy. That being said, I agree with Ellis and his ideas and its refreshing to hear some candid answers from a person of authority. Doogie does a nice job with his Ellis interviews.

Yeah, I said this the last time one of these was posted...awkward.

Maybe some public criticism in hopes that Tubby resigns rather than the U having to fire and buy him out?

Well i am not sure you can get a tougher schedule... we were number 2 in SOS.... so not sure what they are talking about there, that is the only reason right now we are going to the dance.

We all can see what ellis is talking about tubby is not putting athletic kids in the open court were they would be very dangerous.

The strength of schedule calculation doesn't mean you had a tough schedule. It means you played teams with good records (i.e., Duke, Memphis, NDSU, SDSU in the nonconf) and avoided teams with horrible records.

That is, SOS does not equal difficulty. The number of "tough, challenging games" Minnesota had was quite limited as compared to a lot of other teams with a worse SOS. Not to mention the way the schedule was constructed, the Gophers had long breaks in December while playing the likes of Lafayette.

SOS helps your computer profile... playing a tough schedule helps your team. They can be different.

As for Ellis, as a long time basketball coach and color analyst for games, he has a history of commenting on basketball and has a far stronger basketball background than most others in his position have.

In his candidness I see some "constructive criticism", but it's not as if he's out there blasting Tubby Smith's every move.

per Doogie:

Gophers senior associate athletic director Mike Ellis, who's in charge of the basketball team, on coach Tubby Smith's future: "We (athletic director Norwood Teague and I) do have a particular background in basketball. We will look at the past ... where we've been and where are we going sums it up. ... We do that with every program. ... It'll be a normal end of the year review. We'll see. We'll make some decisions and move forward."

Go Gophers!!

Sounds vaguely ominous - or maybe not so vaguely.

@gophersnow: AD Norwood Teague & Mike Ellis were at #B1G tourney. Didn't join the team in locker room Thurs. Not trying to create extra tension. #Gophers

Our team didn't join Illinois on the court for the first half.

You get the feeling that Ellis and Teague have a good idea of what this program could be: only D1 in the state, strong recruiting base, fan base eager to explode over team's success. I don't think they will simply defer as Maturi did. "April is the cruelest month," 'someone' once wrote, and some changes by tax day seems inevitable. Clean house or overhaul that seems to be the only question.
