We're about halfway through the season so it's time to hand out some mid-season grades.

Schaffmaster- A. So nice to see her healthy. Defense has been great and she's even setting the middles.

Palabiyik- A-. Struggled a little early but has settled in nicely. Better player than I expected. Clear emotional leader of the team.

Grote- A-. Very solid season with none of the inconsistency we saw last year.

Hansen- B+. Overall pretty solid. Need a little more consistency to raise the grade.

Minatee- B. Been better than expected on the attack. Need more blocks to raise grade.

Thibault- B-. Mostly solid except the Purdue match. There's more in there I think. Waiting for the next gear to kick in.

Awoleye- C+- Absolute beast this weekend but mostly just meh the rest of the year. Improvement to last year's level of play would help this team immensely.

Wucherer- C- Was playing just OK prior to the injury. Looked good this weekend. Has the talent to be a star but just isn't there yet. Like Kate, still hoping for the next gear. When she finds that the rest of the Big 10 better look out.

Acevedo/McGhee/Crowl- P- Not fair to assign a letter grade to this trio. I give the a Passing grade. All three are doing a good job in their roles. Acevedo and McGhee have been very solid in their serve specialist roles. We would not have won the Wisconsin match without Acevedo filling in so well for the injured Wucherer. Crowl is always ready when called on and gives us solid play in whatever role she's asked to play.

I'm wondering if Wucherer had a nagging injury that they allowed to heal. She looked like a different player over the weekend. Confident and happy.

I'd also give Awoleye an A, even when she's not blocking as well as this past weekend, she's almost never out of position and gets so many touches on the block that the defense can clean up and turn into a transition kill.

I've given up expecting much success out of the quick middle set from Shaffmaster, I think she's just too tall to be good at it, I wouldn't put much of that on Awoleye.

Not sure if Wucherer had a nagging injury before they shut her down. I agree she was very good this last weekend. If we get that Wucherer going forward it will be a huge plus. Phoebe just hasn't been all that prolific with her blocking. That's job 1 for a middle. Again, if we get something more like the dominant blocker we saw this weekend it'll be awesome going forward.

I wouldn't give Shaffmaster an A. Her setting deficiencies are more than balanced by her defense (blocking and floor defense) and her own offense, but enough for an A? Solid B, imo.

I'd give the team a B- at this point.
