Jaylen Kelly-Powell, a four star recruit in 2017 out of Detroit, is looking at transferring from Michigan...may be eligible to grad transfer...been there three years, would have two years left...has been a backup, was not projected as starting in 2020...

Michigan football has another safety considering a transfer.
Jaylen Kelly-Powell, a former four-star recruit who appeared in 20 games over three seasons at Michigan, has entered his name into the NCAA’s transfer portal on Thursday, Michigan spokesman Dave Ablauf confirmed to MLive.
Kelly-Powell plans to pursue a graduate transfer, since he only played in three games during the 2019 season will have two years of eligibility remaining.

The move was first reported Thursday morning by 247Sports, and comes exactly a week after Michigan safeties coach Chris Partridge departed for the University of Mississippi.
A Detroit native, Kelly-Powell played in 10 games as a true freshman in 2017, primarily on special teams but worked his way in at corner. He reverted back to safety in 2018, when he played in seven games, but remained primarily a special teams player.

The 6-foot, 180-pound Kelly-Powell totaled just seven tackles during his Michigan career. He joins fellow safety J’Marick Woods, who entered the transfer portal in October and has since signed to play at Duke.
He is the 14th player in Michigan’s 30-player 2017 recruiting class, one that ranked fifth nationally, to have declared his intention to transfer. That list includes former five-star defensive tackle Aubrey Solomon, four-star linebackers Drew Singleton and Jordan Anthony and Woods.

By entering his name into the transfer portal, Kelly-Powell is allowing coaches from other schools to contact and recruit him. But should he depart, Michigan would be left fewer options at safety.
Daxton Hill and Brad Hawkins are the presumed starters entering 2020, but there is little experience behind them. Quinten Johnson and German Green could be options, but they both played sparingly as true freshmen, or Michigan could decide to move a young corner over.
The Wolverines also welcome in Jordan Morant and R.J. Moten, a pair of four-star safeties, as part of their 2020 recruiting class.
Kelly-Powell is the sixth scholarship player from Michigan to enter the transfer portal since the start of the regular season, joining offensive lineman Stephen Spanellis, receiver Tarik Black, tight end Mustapha Muhammad, Woods and Anthony.

Coaches can contact players in portal but can the players reach out to teams?

14 out of 30 have transferred or have declared their intention to transfer. That was a huge class but almost 50% transferring out can't be viewed as a good thing.

Same class as St. Juste.

I wonder if he is hearing from Benjamin Saint Juste about playing for the Gophers. If he really wants to transfer to the Gophers, there may be an opening. Just saying.

His dad follows several of the Gopher coaches too.

I mean, do we know if this kid is any good? I put more weight into him not getting PT the last 3 years than I do in his 4 star eval out of HS.

St. Juste didn't get much playing time for Michigan and he has worked out all right. Coaches have done a good job with transfers so if they do bring him in I will assume it is because they feel confident he can make an impact.

He played in 10 games as a Freshman and only 10 over the next two seasons. Based on what I’ve read, he had some nagging injuries, and had surgery after the 2018 season. That’s about all I know at this point.

There was excitement about St. Juste's potential after he played in 12 games as a freshman, though. Then he missed a season due to injury and it appeared Harbaugh wanted to move on, using the medical retirement as an excuse.

With Jaylen Kelly-Powell, appears as if he is regressing (10 games as a freshman, 7 as a sophomore, 3 as a junior). I am curious why he couldn't get more run and wasn't figuring into their plans next year.

I will be the first to admit I don't know much at all about the kid and I trust Fleck. If they offer him and think he can contribute I will welcome him. Just curious if this guy is even a P5 level transfer.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if he had injuries the last two years since it seemed like he should be earning more PT, based off his involvement his freshman year. If he ends up a Gopher I hope he can finish his college career on a healthy note!

Perhaps he objected to the Harbaugh sleepovers and would up in the coach's doghouse

Michigan always has a lot of talent waiting in the wings, and it doesn’t seem like they’re patient with injuries. I’m no way did St-Juste look like someone that needed to be medically retired.
