Michigan football has another safety considering a transfer.
Jaylen Kelly-Powell, a former four-star recruit who appeared in 20 games over three seasons at Michigan, has entered his name into the NCAA’s transfer portal on Thursday, Michigan spokesman Dave Ablauf confirmed to MLive.
Kelly-Powell plans to pursue a graduate transfer, since he only played in three games during the 2019 season will have two years of eligibility remaining.
The move was first reported Thursday morning by 247Sports, and comes exactly a week after Michigan safeties coach Chris Partridge departed for the University of Mississippi.
A Detroit native, Kelly-Powell played in 10 games as a true freshman in 2017, primarily on special teams but worked his way in at corner. He reverted back to safety in 2018, when he played in seven games, but remained primarily a special teams player.
The 6-foot, 180-pound Kelly-Powell totaled just seven tackles during his Michigan career. He joins fellow safety J’Marick Woods, who entered the transfer portal in October and has since signed to play at Duke.
He is the 14th player in Michigan’s 30-player 2017 recruiting class, one that ranked fifth nationally, to have declared his intention to transfer. That list includes former five-star defensive tackle Aubrey Solomon, four-star linebackers Drew Singleton and Jordan Anthony and Woods.
By entering his name into the transfer portal, Kelly-Powell is allowing coaches from other schools to contact and recruit him. But should he depart, Michigan would be left fewer options at safety.
Daxton Hill and Brad Hawkins are the presumed starters entering 2020, but there is little experience behind them. Quinten Johnson and German Green could be options, but they both played sparingly as true freshmen, or Michigan could decide to move a young corner over.
The Wolverines also welcome in Jordan Morant and R.J. Moten, a pair of four-star safeties, as part of their 2020 recruiting class.
Kelly-Powell is the sixth scholarship player from Michigan to enter the transfer portal since the start of the regular season, joining offensive lineman Stephen Spanellis, receiver Tarik Black, tight end Mustapha Muhammad, Woods and Anthony.
