Michael Carter's Impressive Series Culminating in the Pick 6 (and Co-B1G DEF POTW)

This is the kind of DB play we need so we can stack the box against Michigan this Saturday. Carter was playing out of his mind that possession.

I'm worried about the potential for a double move, but hopefully he continues to play at this level.

I'm not, on none of those plays was he jumping the route before it was thrown. He was playing well off the line and able to see when the ball was leaving the QB's hand.

True, but one pump fake would probably cause him to jump, and the film Michigan watches this week will certainly encourage it.

Most impressive play was the diving break-up on 2nd and 10. Not taking anything away from the pick 6, but the swat before that was just phenomenal, especially when you watch the replay after.

Agreed. You hardly ever see that at the college level, let alone in the NFL... especially without using the other hand on the WR's back for leverage.

Yes sir, mr. scout. Your use of the one pump fake sounds like you are home on a Saturday alone watching a XXX skin flick dreaming up things. :)

Isn't "jumping the route before it was thrown" the very definition of what could get you burned on a double move?

Very true, but this is where discipline and coaching comes in. Hopefully he's not too hyped for it and bites.

I think he's saying he wasn't jumping the route before it was thrown, hence, he's not as susceptible to the double move cause he's waiting to see it come out of the QB's hand. Most QB's can't fake to the point where their almost at release point before they bring it down. I think I've seen Big Ben do that a few times, but it's pretty rare.

But as I said in most post above, discipline plays a part. I'd have to believe they're keeping an eye on that possibility.

I've been watching Gopher football since the early 80s, so I'm rather used to our DBs getting torched by biting on pump fakes. Seeing that Carter progression was one of the best things I've ever seen from the Gophs on Defense and I'd love it if it wasn't a one-time fluke.

love how the play-by-play guy just makes a mess in his pants after carter intercepts it. dude went crazy!

Yes but as I noted, on NONE of those plays was he jumping the route before it was thrown.

Obviously the Gophers are screwed for the rest of the season due to Michael Carter's fine play on Saturday. Damn you Michael Carter, and damn you double moves! The season is lost.

Many (most?) Gopher fans are simply incapable of believing that any of our players are any good. When anyone plays well, it's because they were playing against weak competition (Gray in the non-con) or because they got lucky taking advantage of a fluke play/scheme (Carter). About the only recent (last 5 years) Gopher player I can think of that people couldn't talk themselves out of was Decker.

I realize it has to be embarrassing for you that you predicted Gray to be first team All-Big Ten QB and now he's back at WR after 6 games, but please, enough with the nonsense that he's a good QB because of what he did against UNLV and New Hampshire.

I'm still pissed that Dpo tackled Q and rolled up on his ankle.

DAMN YOU DPODOLL!

While we didn't agree about MG as a QB, we did agree that he is terrific football player.

We also agree here. In the past I have said that the outlook gopher fans have towards their players is the polar opposite of badger fans. Badgers fans believe that every players is a future NFL HOF and Gopher fans (not all) believe anyone playing for the gophers wasn't good enough to play somewhere else.

Most gopher fans are sad lot. They want MN highschool players that have an option of playing somewhere else to stay home but they don't bother to come to the game (or there aren't 58,000 fans?). They want the team to leave it all out on the field...but the fans can't be at the games on time or stay to the end.

24, they are not a sad lot. They just don't know anything. All talk, no action.

That could also be the case.

The sad thing is everyone (high school players) know this; that's why it is next to impossible to get the ones with options to stay home (Decker and the Barbers didn't have options). And when a player the caliber of Adam Weber who did have multiple option decides to stay home, and despite the quality of the teams he played on has one of the better QB college careers of all-time....his family has to listen to the boo birds for the better part of 4 years.

Back on topic, Carter will see at least one, if not more, double moves Saturday. Lets hope he has his reads in place, is up to the challenge and has some S help.
