We could be setting ourselves up for a great game against the Badgers if we can pull out a win @ Nebraska. The icing on the cake of possibly beating Wisconsin to go to the B1G championship is the ability for us to possibly block Melvin Gordon from winning a Heisman. If we could somehow shut him down, it wouldn't look very good on his resume to disappear in the most important game of the season. It is going to be a very tall order but a Gopher can dream right?

Regardless of whether we win this weekend in Lincoln, the Axe game will be a big one.
Simply LIMIT gordon to short runs and you probably test wisky to the brink as long as you can score a few.

If anyone can stop Wisconsin;s run game, they are screwed. Their QB is worse than ours.

We need to crowd the box and dare them to throw the ball. Hopefully BBC and Eric Murray can play solid man coverage. It will pretty much be the exact game plan everyone has against us minus the double team the TE.

Pretty much the exact same game plan everyone has against Wisconsin, too. It's one thing to say we're going to stack the box and stop Gordon, but as is being proven week in and week out, it's another thing entirely to go out and execute it. Thankfully we have the secondary to match up with their receivers without dedicating a lot of extra help, so we can put extra guys on the job of slowing down their run game. But to do it will be a very tall task. I really hope they (the Gophers) play their game of the year, and do think there's a chance they do given the significance of the game.

I'm not taking anything away from Gordon (I think he's the best back in the country) but I would be much more worried about him beating our defense if he was a QB. Whatever Claeys has us doing, the blind spot of our defense seems to be QB contain. I don't think we'll "shut down" Gordon but I could see something like 30 carries for 120 yards which if we limit big plays within those stats would leave us in a good position to win the game.

Melvin Gordon is crazy. Limiting him to one long touchdown is a victory.

You need to wrap up and drive through with tackles in order to bring him down consistenly. Claeys better talk with DW3 about wrapping up. Even as a senior he still goes for the big shoulder blow type hits that usually don't bring the runner down to the ground. Our Safetys tackling in space will be a big part to stopping Gordon since their O-line is good so he will get lanes throughout the game.

Crowding the box against a team more than happy to line up with 1 WR also means you're one mis fit from a touchdown.

Gotta figure that's what everyone else is doing against them as well; with little success. What will we do that Nebraska and the other teams did not? Honest question. I like our chances leaving our corners to fend for themselves, but will that be enough?

Also wonder if we will see their mobile QB come at all, seeing as that was kind of our weakness last week. If they leave what's his nuts in there-the pocket passer- I think our chances go up significantly.

I'm much more concerned with their defense. They are the best in the league right now.

Their defense has been tough, but they've whipped up mostly smaller spread teams (MD, RU, PU, NE). They 3-4 is great against passing teams but it has its problems with run teams.

One game at a time. To me, out season would be complete if we can pull out a victory against the Cornholers (but that is purely from a deep, passionate hate for Nebraska). ;-)

I hope you're right, but to me nebraska is a dynamic offense that they shut down.

didnt he only put up like 63 yds or something like that against us last year? I fully expect the same this year. Claeys will have it figured out. I got such an axe to grind with some badger friends of mine... we need this game this year. Got to stop the streak

Our best hope against Gordon is that he is still tired from putting up over 400 last week. For the record, I don't like this thread looking past Nebraska.

I believe he only put up like 67 vs Iowa as well last year. The problem is he has been better this year. I am cautiously optimistic though. It will be interesting to see how he fares in Iowa City this weekend. It will make me sick to see a Badger with the Heisman trophy. The only way he doesn't IMO is to be shut down in the most important games which would be ours.

Is he really everyone's number 1 for heisman right now? I can't believe this. I have to believe the Oregon QB is still favored ahead of him and maybe even Boykin from TCU would beat out Gordon. I feel like the only way Gordon wins it is if Wisconsin wins out. Maybe thats just me and my hate for Wisconsin but I feel like he has a lot of work to do still and he still has to earn it rather than the sentiment its his to lose

Yeah, everything I've read still has Mariota in 1st with Gordon 2nd. A lot of folks imply it's really a two horse race at this point but concede that Cooper, Prescott and a few others will get invites.

Wow. Guess I need to cheer harder for Oregon then because I don't want a badger to get the Heisman.

Melvin the "____?____ winning another heisman for Wisconsin would be tough to swallow but I think he should get it.

He is neck and neck with Mariota IMO. I agree that Wisconsin has to win out and make it to the B1G championship for him to win it though. Hence why I said it would be nice to block him from a Heisman as well.

I've not watched any of WI's games this year, but has anyone tried 4 DL and 4 LB's. If you are going to put a safety in the box all of the time and not respect the pass game, why not make it an extra LB. Then run blitz with the 4 DL and 2 LBS and keep a LB on each side covering the cutback lanes. Some risks involved....

I wonder if the difference is at all related to James White playing for the Patriots

He admittedly had a bad game against Iowa. He only averaged 3.6 ypc. Yes, White took half of the carries. But 62 yards on 17 carries isn't exactly dominating. Yes he is getting more carries this year, but he is also just a better RB this year all around. He is averaging a crazy 8.6 YPC this year.
